Butler Out-Shoots Texas Tech in 103-95 Overtime BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle

Postgame Press Conference (Texas Tech and Butler)

Jahmyl Telfort and DJ Davis combined for 51 points and Posh Alexander added a triple-double as Butler claimed a 103-95 overtime win over Texas Tech Thursday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The match-up was part of the annual BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle and the win moves the Bulldogs to 6-2 on the season. The Red Raiders are now 5-2.

COACH THAD MATTA: "That was a high, high-level college basketball game, especially for November 30. Fortunately, we were able to get out with the win. We got down six or seven points there in the second half, but our guys showed a lot of resiliency. They never wavered in the huddles. That's a big win for our program, and our crowd was great tonight. Hinkle was rocking."

OF NOTE:
  • Telfort led Butler with 26 points, which matched the season-high for a Bulldog. His three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Bulldogs an 83-81 lead before Pop Isaacs hit a runner with four seconds to play to send the game to overtime.
  • Davis scored a season-best 25 points. He was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line with eight of those makes coming in the overtime session to ice the game.
  • Alexander's triple-double included 10 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. The 10 rebounds matched his career-high. It is the first triple-double of his career, and the first by a Butler player since Roosevelt Jones achieved the feat at St. John's Feb. 6, 2016.
  • The Bulldogs last scored 100 points in a game Dec. 30, 2017 when Butler defeated No. 1 Villanova, 101-93, at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
  • Both teams shot better than 50 percent as the Bulldogs registered a 54.5-percent clip. It's the fourth consecutive game shooting 50 percent or better. Butler has made at least half of its attempts in five of the first eight games of the season.
  • Butler out-rebounded Texas Tech, 40-24.
  • Texas Tech went 13-for-26 from three-point range, but the Red Raiders' final made three-pointer of the game came with 4:51 remaining in regulation. That bucket gave Texas Tech its largest lead of the game at 73-67 following a 15-2 run. Just moments earlier, Texas Tech had taken a 68-67 lead, which was their first since an 11-9 advantage less than five minutes into the game.
  • Butler went 12-for-27 from behind the arc. Davis, Telfort and Pierre Brooks II each had three makes from long range. Brooks had 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
  • Both teams had five players in double figures. Butler's balanced attack has seen at least five players score in double figures in five of the team's eight games to start the season.
  • Andre Screen was the fifth Bulldog to hit the mark, finishing with 14 points on 7-for-8 shooting. He has made 27 of 35 attempts from the field to begin his Butler career (77 percent).
  • Texas Tech was led by 24 points from Chance McMillian, who went 8-for-10 from three-point range. Joe Toussaint had 18 points and 12 assists.
  • Texas Tech only turned the ball over seven times, while converting 12 Butler turnovers into 19 points.
  • Butler went 19-for-25 from the free throw line, led by Davis's 10-for-10 night. The Bulldogs entered the night ranked 21st nationally in free throw percentage, while Davis was 13th individually in the NCAA.
  • Butler is now 3-0 all-time against Texas Tech and improves to 3-1 in the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle.
  • Butler is 74-2 over its last 76 non-conference home games; Butler has won 12 straight non-conference home games.
  • Butler has scored at least 80 points in six of its eight games to start the season; the Bulldogs only hit the 80-point mark six times total a season ago.

UP NEXT: Butler hosts Buffalo in the team's second contest of a five-game homestand at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The tip with Buffalo is slated for Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for the game, which will also air on FS1. The Bulldogs will be at home through the team's BIG EAST opener vs. Georgetown Dec. 19.
