INDIANAPOLIS – Vanderbilt ended Thursday night's game on a 12-2 run to hand Butler their first home loss of the season by the final score of 51-39. The Bulldogs trailed the Commodores by two at the final media timeout (39-37) but were hit with the loss to move their overall record to 6-3. The win improves Vanderbilt to 9-1.
Vanderbilt scored 42 of their 51 points in the paint and dominated the rebound battle 41-31. The Commodore defense caused 24 Butler turnovers resulting in 19 points. 21 of Vanderbilt's 41 rebounds came on the offensive glass allowing the visitors to score 15 second chance points.
Each team made three shots in the opening quarter and the 'Dawgs would lead the 'Dores by one after 10 minutes. A 9-0 Vandy scoring run was the difference in the second quarter. Vanderbilt abandoned shooting from the outside and started to attack the basket to win that stretch 14-4.
BU trailed 20-11 at the half but scored 18 points in the third quarter to get the game within six heading to the fourth.
Caroline Strande put the fans on their feet at Hinkle with a wing 3-pointer that made the game 39-37 with less than five to play. The Commodores responded with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to swing the momentum and would exit Hinkle Fieldhouse with a 51-39 victory.
