DETROIT — The Butler women's lacrosse team earned their first win of the season in a 12-10 battle with the Detroit Mercy Titans on Sunday. This is also head coach
Maggie Zentgraf's first victory in her early Butler career. Butler improves to 1-2 on the season while Detroit Mercy drops to 1-2.
How it Happened:
Butler found themselves in a 0-3 hole early in the first period, as Detroit Mercy rattled off three goals in the first 2:17 of game time. The Butler had a strong response though, going on a 4-0 run of their own.
Emmie Ridgeway scored two of the four goals to give Butler a 4-3 lead going into the second period.
After trading a few goals to begin the second, the Bulldogs ended the first half on a 3-0 run. Butler outshot Detroit Mercy, 22-12, and had a season-high seven saves in the first half, taking an 8-5 lead.
Butler would maintain their lead in the third period, allowing three goals but scoring two of their own.
Kaley Attaway scored one goal and assisted on the other in the period to put the Bulldogs ahead 10-8.
The Titans would narrow the lead to one to open scoring in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs put the game away with back-to-back goals by
Leah Rubino and
KK Callaghan.
Notable Stats:
- Emmie Ridgeway and Leah Rubino led the Bulldogs with two goals apiece.
- Kayleigh Colleary and Julia Putzi led Butler with three points and two assists each.
- Caroline Smith played in goal for a career-high 60 minutes, recording a career-high 11 saves.
- The Bulldogs logged season-highs in assists (7), shots on goal (29), and ground balls (20).
- Butler's 39 shots are the second-most in program history for a single game.
