#9 UConn Uses Extra Innings to Defeat Butler 6-5

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler battled #9 UConn through 13 innings on Friday night but were ultimately defeated by the Huskies 6-5 at Elliot Ballpark. Game one of the weekend series was decided by a bases loaded walk. Justin Willis got the win while the Cole Graverson took the loss.

Butler didn't waste any time in the opener by scoring a quick run in the first off a Scott Jones single to center. Carter Dorighi scored the first run of the game, but the equalizer came soon after on a solo home run from Huber.

Dorighi tripled to right in the third to score Joey Urban and a sac fly from Jones would score Dorighi to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. UConn recovered with three runs in the fourth to give the home team a one-run advantage.

The fifth inning was action packed with Butler regaining the lead. Jake DeFries homered to right to knot the score at 4-4 and Xavier Carter's single to center would score Dorighi. UConn fought back with a solo homer in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game at 5-5 and that score would run through nine innings.

Each team had chances in extras, but the game would be decided on a bases loaded walk. Daniels drew the base on balls and Broadhurst would score in the 13th to settle the game.

Carter Dorighi was great for Butler with a double and a triple in the setback. The BU two-hole hitter also scored three runs. Joey Urban had a pair of hits including a double and scored a run on Friday night. Nine-hole hitter Jake DeFries had the homer and a run scored for the 'Dawgs.

Dawson Taylor got the start for Butler and tossed four innings. Ben Whiteside and Clay Holzworth would also appear before Graverson. UConn used five arms on the hill. Husky starter Andrew Sears was sent to the dugout just two innings into the game. Zach Fogell did the heavy lifting, striking out nine over 5.1. Willis got the win by getting the final two outs.
