STORRS – UConn designated hitter Luke Broadhurst hit a one-out, two-run, walk-off homerun against Butler on Saturday afternoon to lift UConn to a 7-6 victory. The Bulldogs broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the eighth and would score two in the top of the ninth, but the Huskies answered with four runs over the final two innings to find the win column.
Scott Jones opened the game with a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield. The 2-0 lead grew to 3-0 in the second inning after a solo homerun from
Dominic Milano. The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the fourth, and would tie the game in the fifth after a two-run homerun.
Butler looked to be in a good spot late in the game as Milano returned to the plate to deliver a sac fly that scored Jones. UConn wouldn't go away in the contest and would use an RBI single and a sac fly to regain the lead with one inning to play.
Butler capitalized on an error to score their first run in the ninth inning and
Garret Gray would single to center allowing Jones to score the go-ahead run.
The bottom of the ninth started with a fly out, but
Lukas Galdoni would walk the next batter. With one on and one out, Broadhurst would end the game with one swing of the bat.
Scott Jones,
Garret Gray,
Dominic Milano and
Xavier Carter all had multi-hit games against the Huskies. Jones had the two RBIs early and scored two runs, Milano had the solo homer in the second and two-RBI.
Gray and Carter each went 2-for-4 from the dish. Gray had the late RBI and Carter posted a double, a walk and also scored a run.
Cory Bosecker got the start for BU and tossed 4.1 innings before handing the ball off to
Clay Holzworth. The Bulldogs were cruising with Holzworth on the mound. He didn't allow a hit over 1.2 innings and got a strikeout on the mound.
Ben Whiteside and
Lukas Galdoni were the last 'Dawgs to pitch on Saturday. Galdoni was hit with the loss after getting four outs.
The final game of the series will be played tomorrow at Elliot Ballpark. First pitch is set for 12 PM.
