Posh Alexander Brings his BIG EAST Talents to Butler Basketball

| By:

Posh Alexander, who has led the BIG EAST in steals while also scoring in double figures for St. John's in each of the last three seasons, has signed a financial aid agreement to join the Butler Basketball program.

Alexander will have two seasons of eligibility at Butler, beginning with the 2023-24 season.

"Posh is an elite on-ball defender who brings toughness from three years in the BIG EAST; he knows the physicality and the skill level of this league," said Butler head coach Thad Matta. "Offensively, he can run a team and has shown the ability to get to the rim and make plays. It will be good to have him on our side as opposed to game-planning how to slow him down."

As a junior at St. John's during the 2022-23 season, Alexander averaged 10.2 points, 4.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. His 2.0 steals per game were 30th nationally.

He was an All-BIG EAST honorable mention selection as a sophomore during the 2021-22 season, while also being named to the watch list for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award. He was among the Top 20 nationally in both steals per game (2.3, 11th) and assists per game (5.5, 19th). He scored 13.8 points per game and his 49.8 field goal percentage was fourth in the BIG EAST.

Alexander burst on the scene during the 2020-21 season as he was voted the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and the BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He, Allen Iverson and Patrick Ewing are the only players in BIG EAST history to be named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. He averaged 10.9 points, 4.3 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game, with his steals figure ranking sixth nationally.

Season tickets for the 2023-24 Butler Basketball season are on sale now. The schedule will feature an increase to 19 games this season, highlighted by all 10 BIG EAST rivals visiting Hinkle. Butler will also host Texas Tech Nov. 30 in the annual BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, and the Pac 12's Cal comes to Indianapolis Dec. 9. The home schedule will begin with an exhibition game on Homecoming Weekend (Oct. 27-29).
