Bulldogs Sweep Kent State in Season Opener

INDIANAPOLIS — The Butler volleyball team completed the sweep against Kent State 3-0, (25-15, 25-23, 25-17) in their first match of the regular season inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldog newcomers made an immediate impact at the Bulldog Brawl helping head coach Kyle Shondell win his first match at Butler. This is the first time completing the sweep in the season opener since 2017.

Set 1: Butler 25-15
The Bulldogs opened up the match and the regular season with a serving ace by Reese Bates. Butler would add on with a 3-point run led by consecutive kills by Mariah Grunze to take a 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs would then begin to run away with the set after six straight points extended their lead to 13-7. Kent State struggled to keep up as the Bulldogs would continue to widen the gap to close out the set. Grunze led the team with six kills and two digs while Cora Taylor amassed 11 assists.

Set 2: Butler 25-23
Grace Boggess led off the second set with a kill before Kent State responded taking a 6-4 lead. The Bulldogs would regain the lead after another serving ace by Bates. The two teams would battle back and forth before the Bulldogs would pull away at 17-14. The Golden Eagles weren't done yet as they crawled back to tie the game at 22. Abby Maesch stepped up with consecutive kills to cap off the second set. Maesch finished with a team-high five kills and five digs while Jaymeson Kinley tallied six digs and five assists. 

Set 3: Butler 25-17
Kills by Boggess, Maesch, and Taylor helped the Bulldogs jump out to an early 3-1. A 4-0 run by the Bulldogs highlighted by a kill from Boggess helped extend the lead to 16-12. They would continue to cruise from there eventually leading to the Bulldogs beginning the Kyle Shondell era with a win. Maesch again would lead the team with five kills while Taylor reached 10 assists and a serving ace. 

Stat of the Match: Butler finished with 44 kills to just 26 kills by Kent State. Grunze and Maesch each tallied 14 kills.

  • Maesch generated a team-high 15.5 points on 14 kills, six digs, and a block
  • Grunze posted 14 kills and nine digs
  • Taylor tallied 31 assists and 4 kills
  • Taylor now has 1,023 career assists as a Bulldog
  • Kinley finished with 11 digs and six assists
  • Bates accumulated 10 digs and two serving aces
