@ButlerVB Suffers First Loss of the Season in Five-Set Battle against North Dakota State

DAYTON — The Butler volleyball team lost their first game of the 2023 campaign against North Dakota State at the Dayton Flyer Classic on Friday afternoon in Ohio. NDSU won the match in five sets by a score of 25-19, 19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-6. The Bulldogs were without Destiny Cherry and Grace Boggess due to illness but saw plenty of promise out of their young talent.

Set 1: NDSU 25-19
The Bison flew out to an early 5-1 lead to begin the match. Kills by Abby Maesch and Mariah Grunze helped bring the Bulldogs back within one point at 6-5. Butler would keep the score within two points until NDSU began to expand the lead 16-10. The young Bulldogs Laiya Ebo and Sawyer Jones weren't ready to give up as their back-to-back blocks helped lead a 4-0 run to make the 16-14. The Bison would then catch fire once again slowly widening the gap, ultimately taking the first set 25-19. Jones finished with a team-high four kills and two blocks.

Set 2: Butler 25-19
Butler would flip the script in the second set taking a 3-2 lead after a serving ace by Grunze. The two teams would remain within two points until the Bulldogs went on a 4-0 spurt to bring the score to 16-12 led by consecutive kills and a block by Maesch. The Bison brought the deficit within three points at 18-15 before kills by Jaeda Lockhart and Ebo helped put the nail in the coffin in the second set. Maesch was the highlight of the set tallying six kills and two blocks in the set.

Set 3: Butler 25-21
The Bulldogs picked up right where they left off in the third set jumping out to a 4-0 lead using blocks from Jones and Grunze. Butler would hold onto the lead until a 5-0 run by NDSU helped the Bison creep back within one point at 14-13. The momentum would quickly shift with the Bulldogs responding with a 6-0 spurt topped off by a serving ace from Grunze. Butler would never look back, closing out the set with kills by Maesch and Grunze. Cora Taylor's 12 assists and a serving ace headlined the third set.

Set 4: NDSU 25-21
Jones opened the fourth frame with a kill and block, but Butler would still trail the Bison 4-3. The Bulldogs responded with a serving ace by Jaymeson Kinley that helped tie the game back up 6-6. The two teams would remain in a deadlock with neither team taking a significant lead until the Bison took a 18-15. Butler stormed back to bring the score back within one led by kills from Grunze and Ebo 19-18. NDSU countered with one last run to expand their lead and eventually closed out the set 25-21.

Set 5: NDSU 15-6
The fifth set began with another battle with Elise Ward entering the game and helping tie the game up at two points a piece. NDSU then slowly increased their lead until Lockhart would bring the deficit back within two at 7-5. The Bison then went on a tear going on a 4-0 spurt and ending the match on a 5-0 run.
