ButlerVB Drops Three Set Match to Wright State at the Dayton Beavercreek Invitational

DAYTON, OH. — The Butler volleyball team lost to Wright State in three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-17) at the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational. The Bulldogs now hold a 5-5 record this season.

Set 1: Wright State 25-17
The Raiders flew out to an early 6-4 lead in the first set. A Grace Boggess kill and Rylie Tam serving ace helped the Bulldogs rally back to take an 11-10 lead. The two teams would remain within two points until Wright State went on a 5-0 spurt to extend their lead to 22-16 and eventually win the set 25-17. Mariah Grunze led the team with five kills in the set. 

Set 2: Wright State 25-22
The Bulldogs fell behind early once again after the Raiders gained an early 3-0 lead. Kills from Grunze and Elise Ward helped Butler cut the deficit back to within one point at 12-11. Wright State then began to catch fire going on a 3-0 run followed by a 4-0 spurt to widen the gap to 21-16. The Bulldogs used kills from Abby Maesch and Boggess to make a comeback bringing the score back to within two points at 24-22 but the Raiders would eventually score on the next point to win the second set. Maesch had a team-high five kills and a serving ace.

Set 3: Wright State 25-19
Wright State continued their dominance in the third frame as they would once again fly out to a 7-2 lead and would never look back. Butler would fight back, shortening the deficit to 15-12 after a 5-0 spurt using kills from Destiny Cherry and Grunze. The Raiders responded with a 4-0 run to widen their lead to 22-16 and eventually winning the match 25-19. Grunze's six kills led both teams in the third frame.

Stat of the Match
Abby Maesch finished the match with just her fifth career double-double while tallying 10 kills and 10 digs over the three sets.

  • Cora Taylor tallied 30 assists, five blocks, and three digs. 
  • Jaymeson Kinley amassed 17 digs and five assists.
  • Grunze led the team with 14 kills while also adding seven digs.
  • Maesch earned a double-double with 10 kills and 10 assists.

The Bulldogs will return to action tomorrow for their final match of the Dayton Beavercreek Invitational against Cincinnati at 2 p.m.
