ButlerVB Loses to No. 11 Creighton in Three Sets

INDIANAPOLIS — The Butler volleyball team dropped to No. 11 Creighton in three sets (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) to conclude the final match of the BIG EAST opening week. The Bulldogs now hold a 0-2 record in the conference and fall to an overall record of 6-7 on the season.

Set 1: Creighton 25-22
The Bulldogs jumped out of the gates with a 5-2 lead after Cora Taylor had two serving aces. Creighton would come crawling back to tie the game at 8-8 before a kill by Elise Ward helped Butler take back the lead. The Blue Jays would respond with a 3-0 run and then a 4-0 spurt to gain a 17-13 lead. Kills from Abby Maesch and Mariah Grunze allowed the Bulldogs to shorten the gap to one point at 23-22, but Creighton would then score the next two points to win the first set. Grunze and Elise Ward tied for a team-high four kills in the set. 

Set 2: Creighton 25-17
The Blue Jays dominated the second set flying out to a 3-0 lead followed by four straight points to take an early 8-2 lead. A kill by Ward and a serving ace by Grace Boggess brought the score back within three points at 13-10. Creighton would then go on a run extending their lead 19-12 and ultimately closing out the set at 25-17. Jaymeson Kinley finished with a set-high 10 digs.

Set 3: Creighton 25-17
Consecutive kills from Maesch gave Butler an early lead in the third frame. The Blue Jays would then come back using a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. Taylor brought Butler into the match with a kill to make the score 12-10. Creighton then found a new gear going on a 6-0 spurt to extend their lead to 20-13. The Bulldogs would rally back with a 5-0 run that included back-to-back serving aces to bring the score to 24-20. The Blue Jays then spoiled the comeback, clinching the match 25-20. 

Stat of the Match
Jaymeson Kinley tallied a match-high 22 digs, which was double the amount of any player in the match. Kinley also tied Creighton's Ellie Bolton for the most digs in a three-set match in the BIG EAST conference this season.

  • Taylor amassed 26 assists, four digs, and two serving aces in the match.
  • Kinley collected 22 digs and a serving ace in the match.
  • Ward led all Bulldogs with 10 kills to go with eight digs.
  • Grunze had seven kills and nine digs in the match.
  • Cherry added to her efficient offensive play tallying five kills with just one error.

The Bulldogs will head on the road for the first time in the BIG EAST conference play to compete in consecutive matches. Butler will face off against Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. followed by a match against Villanova on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
