Against a loaded national field, Butler posted an incredibly impressive performance at the Virginia Invitational. The Bulldogs finished eighth as a team, coming in ahead of six nationally-ranked programs.

The Bulldogs entered the meet ranked No. 19 in this week's national polls, and Saturday saw Butler defeat No. 4 Stanford, No. 7 Colorado, No. 18 Washington, No. 25 Princeton, No. 27 Iowa State, and No. 28 Michigan.

Saturday was just the second time in Butler program history defeating Stanford and Colorado. The Bulldogs came in ahead of Stanford at the 2004 NCAA Championship and defeated Colorado at the 2020 NCAA Championship.

Six of the seven teams that placed in front of Butler Saturday are ranked among the Top 12 in this week's national poll. No. 1 Northern Arizona captured the team title, followed by No. 3 BYU and No. 6 North Carolina.

The Bulldogs were led by Florian Le Pallec, who finished ninth in his Butler debut. He crossed the line in a time of 23:35.9. Drew Bosley of Northern Arizona claimed the individual title, covering the 8k course in a time of 23:20.3. There were a total of 217 runners in the field.

Butler's runners were able to move through the field as the race progressed. As a team, the Bulldogs were 14th at the 5K mark. With 1,000 meters to go, Butler was in 11th and utilized a strong closing stretch to climb into eighth.

COACH MATT ROE ON TODAY'S PERFORMANCE: "Our main objective today was to be a tough team that performs at a high level under duress. That is the identity we are seeking both in training and racing. We've achieved that thus far in our preparation and today we did as well on the course."

"No team moved through the field as well as we did. That wasn't completely by design so we need to position ourselves a little better moving forward. That said, I loved how we kept our composure and closed with great toughness and focus."

The nationally-acclaimed field got an early look at the Panorama Farms Cross Country Course in Earlysville, Va., which will host the 2023 NCAA Championships Saturday, Nov. 18.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will face yet another quality field Oct. 13 at the Nuttycombe Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin. Butler's women will return to action with next weekend's Louisville Cross Country Classic.
