Late Spurt Gives Seton Hall 78-72 Win over Butler


Visiting Seton Hall scored the final eight points of the game to take a 78-72 win over Butler Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
 
Kadary Richmond's 24-point, 12-rebound performance led Seton Hall, which is receiving votes in both national polls and entered the day tied for the lead in the conference standings.
 
With the win, Seton Hall is now 12-5 (5-1 BIG EAST), while the Bulldogs fall to 11-6 (2-4 BIG EAST).
 
HOW IT TRANSPIRED:
  • Both teams came out of the gates strong offensively, combining to make six of their first eight attempts from three-point range in the opening minutes.
  • A 15-3 Seton Hall run gave the Pirates a 28-20 lead with 10:09 remaining in the first half.
  • Seton Hall made eight of their first 13 three-point attempts, with all eight coming in the first 15 minutes of the game.
  • Seton Hall led, 45-37, at the half.
  • A 9-0 run by Butler tied the game at 48-48 with 15:22 remaining.
  • A series of ties were followed by a Boden Kapke three-pointer, which gave Butler its first lead of the second half at 62-60 with 7:04 to play.
  • The teams traded baskets until Al-Amir Dawes made a floater in the lane with 1:57 to play, which knotted the game at 72-72.
  • Butler would miss four shots down the stretch as a Richmond pull-up jumper and four Seton Hall free throws led to the final margin.
 
OF NOTE:
  • This is Seton Hall's fifth consecutive win in the series between the two teams.
  • Butler is now 8-2 at Hinkle Fieldhouse this season.
  • Posh Alexander led Butler with 17 points and four assists.
  • Jalen Thomas scored 15 points and had a team-high seven rebounds.
  • With 12 points today, Pierre Brooks II  has scored in double figures in every game this season.
  • Butler went 15-for-16 from the free throw line. Entering the game, Butler ranked eighth nationally in free throw shooting at 78.3 percent. Butler has shot 70 percent or better from the line in all but one game this season.
  • Seton Hall had 13 blocks, the most by a Butler opponent this season.
  • The teams combined for only 18 turnovers.
  • Seton Hall shot 51 percent for the game, including 54 percent in the second half. Butler shot 41 percent.
  • Dylan Addae-Wusu (14), Dre Davis (14), and Dawes (10) each had double figures for the Pirates.
 
UP NEXT: Butler makes the short drive to Cincinnati for the Tuesday night tip against Xavier. The 6:30 p.m. tip will air on FS1. The Bulldogs return to Hinkle Fieldhouse Saturday (Jan. 20) to face DePaul. Tickets are still available for that contest.
