Bulldogs Pull Away in First Half to Top DePaul, 74-60


Butler built a first-half lead and kept DePaul at bay the rest of the way to take a 74-60 win Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
 
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 12-7 (3-5 BIG EAST).
 
The Blue Demons fall to 3-15 and 0-7 in conference play.
 
HOW IT TRANSPIRED:
 
  • Butler used a 13-2 run to take a 27-18 lead with 4:18 remaining in the first half.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers by Jahmyl Telfort and DJ Davis to end the first half gave the Bulldogs a 37-24 advantage at intermission, the largest lead of the first 20 minutes.
  • The lead grew to 17 (at 47-30) within the first four minutes of the second half, which was the largest lead of the game.
  • DePaul would cut the lead to single digits only once the rest of the way (at 49-40 with 11:07 remaining); Pierre Brooks II responded with a pair of three-pointers to put the game out of reach.
 
OF NOTE:
  • Posh Alexander and Davis combined for all 11 of Butler's steals; Alexander tied his career-high with six, while Davis set a new personal-best with five.
  • The Bulldogs went 18-for-21 from the free throw line (86 percent). Entering the game, Butler ranked seventh nationally in free throw shooting at 78.6 percent. Butler has shot 70 percent or better from the line in all but one game this season.
  • Davis went a perfect 7-for-7 from the line; entering the game, Davis ranked second nationally in free throw percentage (96.2).
  • Butler shot only 40 percent from the field, while the Bulldog defense limited DePaul to a 42-percent clip.
  • The Bulldogs had a 37-30 rebounding advantage, including 13 offensive boards. Butler is 10-0 this season when out-rebounding its opponent.
  • Brooks led the Bulldogs with 20 points on 7-for-15 shooting. It was his fifth 20-point game of the season and his sixth time leading the team in scoring. Entering the game, Brooks was fifth in the BIG EAST in scoring at 16.4 points per game; he has scored in double figures in every game this season.
  • Alexander and Davis each scored 17 points for the Bulldogs. Alexander added a game-high six assists.
  • Telfort tied his career-high with nine rebounds.
  • Butler had only eight turnovers, including just one in the first half. Butler has committed 10 or fewer turnovers in 10 games this season. Butler is 9-3 when committing fewer turnovers than its opponent.
  • Jalen Thomas had eight points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.
  • Jalen Terry led DePaul with 15 points on five three-pointers.
  • Butler is 19-2 against DePaul since joining the BIG EAST and has won eight straight.
  • Butler is 9-2 at Hinkle Fieldhouse this season.
