Marquette Holds Off Butler 59-48

MILWAUKEE – Butler opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 scoring run to tie the game at 48-48, but the Golden Eagles would bounce back to end the game on an 11-0 scoring run to collect a 59-48 victory at the Al McGuire Center. Caroline Strande led BU with 13 points in the setback and with 12 points, Rachel Kent would reach 1,500 in her career. The Bulldogs are now 9-11 overall while Marquette moves to 16-4.
 
Action inside the Al McGuire Center was tied up (8-8) at the first media timeout. Butler got four points each from Caroline Strande and Rachel Kent and the Golden Eagles saw four of their five starters score a field goal in the opening stages of Saturday's contest.
 
The 'Dawgs trailed the Golden Eagles by just two points after the first quarter 17-15. Strande had a game-high eight points after 10 minutes and Riley Makalusky added a 3-pointer for BU, the team's first of the game.
 
Butler freshmen supplied the team with their first five points of the second quarter and a 3-pointer from Kent followed to tie the game at 23-23. BU ended the first half on a 12-2 scoring run to take a 31-25 lead into the half. Jaynes scored on a paint touch, while Karsyn Norman and Kent added 3-pointers.
 
Butler shot 50 percent from the field (11-22) and 3-point range (4-8) over the opening 20 minutes.
 
Marquette fed the ball to Liza Karlen to start the second half and the senior forward delivered their first six points. Mackenzie Hare got involved soon after with a 3-pointer and her driving layup near the midway point of the third would give the home team a 36-35 lead and force BU to call a timeout.
 
The Golden Eagles outscored Butler 23-8 in the third to take a 48-39 lead into the fourth. Hare and Karlen combined for 33 of Marquette's 48 points.
 
The Bulldogs made adjustments and Marquette's lead vanished over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run to knot the score at 48-48, but Karlen would shine in crunch time with six-straight points for the Eagles. Karlen hit a jumper, scored on the left block, and added two free throws to regain the Marquette lead. The game ended on Marquette's 11-0 scoring run.
