Butler Wins 99-98 Shootout at No. 13 Creighton

Butler picked up a signature win, taking a 99-98 shootout against No. 13 Creighton Friday night in Omaha.

Landon Moore was able to bat away an attempted lob at the rim with 0.5 seconds remaining to close out the win for Butler. The defensive play capped the only BIG EAST game since at least 2011 where both teams scored 95 points in regulation.

The Bulldogs improve to 15-7 (6-5 BIG EAST), with the 15 wins eclipsing Butler's total from last season. Creighton is now 16-6 overall and 7-4 in conference play.

HOW IT TRANSPIRED:

  • Butler's Jalen Thomas picked up his second foul with 14:58 on the first half clock; the Bulldogs held a slim 12-11 lead at that point in the contest.
  • The Bulldogs made six of their first nine attempts from behind the three-point line to take a 29-25 lead with 9:36 remaining in the first half. Creighton responded by scoring the next seven points to re-take the lead.
  • Another 7-0 spurt by Creighton gave the home team a 47-37 lead with 2:17 remaining, the largest lead of the game for either team.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers by Pierre Brooks II and Finley Bizjack (from 30 feet at the first-half horn) pulled Butler within 49-45 at the half.
  • Creighton shot 61 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes. Baylor Scheierman had 17 of the Bluejays' first-half points. Jahmyl Telfort scored 14 to lead the Bulldogs over the first 20 minutes.
  • Butler made five of its first six shots from the field to start the second half as a Boden Kapke three-pointer capped a 15-7 run to start the second half and gave the Bulldogs a 60-56 advantage less than four minutes in. That matched Butler's largest lead at that point in the contest.
  • Creighton's last lead of the game came at 68-67 with 12:15 remaining. There were three ties that followed, but Butler never trailed from that point on.
  • A Davis three-pointer gave the Bulldogs an 87-82 advantage with 6:14 to play, the largest Butler lead of the game.
  • Telfort's turnaround in the paint with 49 seconds remaining gave Butler a 97-94 lead.
  • Butler forced Creighton to the free throw line twice in the closing seconds to protect a three-point lead and take the win.
OF NOTE:
  • Butler played without Posh Alexander, who has been dealing with a foot injury. Landon Moore made the first start of his Butler career and it was first change in Butler's starting line-up this season.
  • This is Butler's second true road win of the season over a Top 15 opponent after also defeating No. 11 Marquette in Milwaukee Jan. 10.
  • Butler is the second team to beat Creighton in Omaha this season (10-2) and snaps the Bluejays' 33-game streak of home Friday wins that dates back to 1975.
  • Both teams shot 55 percent from the field.
  • The Bulldogs made 13 of 22 three-point attempts (59 percent).
  • Butler committed only five turnovers in the game, but two came in the closing minute as the Bulldogs worked to hang on to the lead.
  • Telfort led Butler with 26 points on 12-for-17 shooting, which matched his season-high.
  • Davis made eight of his 12 attempts and finished with 22 points.
  • Freshman Bizjack scored 11 points, his second-best scoring output of the season. Classmate Kapke added eight, including the final two free throws of the game for Butler in place of Davis, who was hit in the eye and had to leave the game with six seconds to play.
  • Butler had a 25-4 advantage in bench points.
  • Creighton had four players eclipse 20 points in Scheierman (26), Steven Ashworth (26), Ryan Kalkbrenner (20), and Trey Alexander (20).
  • Creighton had won eight straight games over Butler in Omaha prior to Friday night.
