INDIANAPOLIS – Purdue Fort Wayne scored nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to come back and defeat Butler by the final score of 12-10. The Bulldogs were in control after a six-run second inning but would lose for the sixth time this season. The Mastodon improved to 4-9 with the victory.
Xavier Carter had a four-hit game for Butler and caught a couple of deep fly balls out in right field to keep the Mastodons in the dugout. He scored two runs for BU as did
Kade Lewis.
Butler's RBI leader was
Joey Urban with three. Urban hit second in the lineup and went 2-for-4 from the plate. He and Carter were the only 'Dawgs with multiple hits in the contest.
Urban highlighted the second inning with a base-clearing double that hit the fence in left center to score Carter,
AJ Solomon and
Carter Dorighi. Urban eventually came around to score himself on a single back up the middle of the diamond by
Jack Moroknek to make the game 6-0.
The Mastodons homered in the third and fourth to get back in the game at 9-3, but the turning point came in the seventh. The Bulldog bullpen couldn't find the zone allowing PFW to score nine runs off three hits. There were five walks in the seventh mixed with a pair of errors and a hit batter to turn the outcome of the game.
Ethan Vecrumba tried to turn the momentum back to the home team with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but BU wouldn't get any closer giving the Mastodons a 12-10 win.
Carson Caudill earned the win (1-1) while
Shane Kilfoyle took the loss. The save went to Kevin Fee, his first of the season.
Butler will return to action this weekend with three games against three different opponents. The Memphis Tigers will host the action and take on Butler Friday evening at 6 PM. The 'Dawgs will face Jackson State Saturday at 1 PM and end the weekend with an 11 AM tilt vs. Presbyterian on Sunday.
