PHOENIX, ARIZ. — The Bulldogs fell in the first match of the GCU Classic against Pacific 3-0, (26-24, 25-16, 25-18).
Elise Ward led the team with nine kills and six digs while
Cora Taylor tallied 21 assists.
Pacific 26-24
After the Tigers took an early 8-5 lead, the Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run using a kill from Destiny Cherry and a serving ace from Taylor to jump ahead 9-8. Kills from Elise Ward then helped the Bulldogs extend the lead to 15-12. Pacific would crawl back to tie the set at 19-19 and the two teams would remain deadlocked to the very end where the Tigers would eventually edge out Butler 26-24. Ward hit for a set-high .500 with five kills.
Pacific 25-16
The second set was all Tigers after they used an early 5-0 spurt to fly out to a 7-1 lead. Kills from Laiya Ebo and blocks from Grace Boggess would help tie the set back up at 8-8. However, this would be the last time the Bulldogs were close to taking Set 2 as Pacific would continue the onslaught, extend the lead to 18-12 and then close out with another 5-0 run to win 25-16.
Pacific 25-18
Butler looked to stay alive in the third set taking an early 5-4 lead with the help from kills by Abby Maesch. The Tigers then regained the lead 10-7 before the Bulldogs fought back to take a 12-11 after a big block from Ward and Zoe McDonald. Pacific then flipped the switch going on consecutive 3-0 runs to make the score 18-14 and eventually closing out the match with a 4-0 spurt to win 25-18
Stat of the Match: After playing 22 matches in her career,
Laiya Ebo had never earned a serving ace until today where she collected a match-high three serving aces.
Cora Taylor and
Abby Maesch also each added a serving ace.
