Dawgs To Play Two Conference Matches This Weekend

Butler will continue their opening stretch of BIG EAST conference play this weekend. The Dawgs will travel out east to take on Villanova and Georgetown. 

Butler will face Georgetown at 7 pm ET on Friday, Oct. 4, followed by a matchup against Villanova at 7 pm ET on Saturday, Oct. 5. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats for the matches can be found here

Butler So Far
Butler will enter the weekend with a record of 7-8 and are 0-2 in BIG EAST play. Last week, the Dawgs dropped matches to Xavier and No. 16 Creighton. 

Bulldog Bites 
  • Alaleh Tolliver leads the BIG EAST in total kills (221) and is second in the conference in kills per set (4.09).
  • Tolliver also leads the conference in total points (256) and is second in points per set with (4.74)
  • Kaylee Finnegan is first in the conference in total assists (524) and is second in the BIG EAST in assists per set (10.08).
  • Finnegan was named BIG EAST setter of the week on 9/2
  • Lauren Evans is third in the conference in digs and digs per set (246) (4.96).
  • Zoe McDonald leads Butler in blocks (55). 
  • Butler finished the non conference portion of their season 7-6
  • Butler is 1-2 in five set matches. 
Scouting Villanova
The Wildcats will enter the match against Butler with an 11-2 record. Villanova is 2-0 in early Big East play and 3-0 in home matches. Villanova leads the BIG EAST in both assists and kills. The Wildcats have four student-athletes who have more than 100 kills through their first 13 matches. Junior Abby Harrell leads the team with 189 kills.

On assists, Alyssa Nelson and Ava Harris split time operating as the team's setter. Nelson leads the team with 306 assists, while Harris isn't far behind with 276 this season. As for the defensive side of the net, Harrell leads the team in digs (140), and Campbell McKinnon leads in blocks (47).

A season ago, Villanova defeated Butler in both meetings. The two teams are tied with 11 wins each in the all-time series.


Scouting Georgetown
Georgetown enters the weekend with a 9-6 record. The Hoyas are 2-0 in conference play and 2-2 in home matches. Three players have tallied more than 100 kills through 15 matches, with sophomore Dionna Mitchell leading the team with 193. Juleigh Urbina quarterbacks the offense, with 380 assists this season. Mitchell is also a key defensive player, recording 140 digs. Graduate student Jade Smith leads the team with 143 digs.

The Dawgs and Hoyas split their two matches last season, each sweeping the other in their respective wins. Butler leads the all-time series, 17-6.

Butler will return to Hinkle Fieldhouse on Oct. 11 and 12. The Dawgs will play Providence on Oct. 10 and UConn on Oct. 11.
