STORRS, Conn. – The Butler men's soccer team kept UConn out of the net for 73 minutes, but the Huskies knocked in two goals in the late stages of their 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs.
Butler's most dangerous offensive threat came over a 90-second stretch beginning in the 68
th minute.
Josemir Gomez created an opportunity but had his 10-yard shot blocked over the end line. The ensuing corner kick resulted in back-to-back blocked shots from
Vygo Verkooijen and
Sam Pitts-Eckersall. A subsequent corner kick found the head of Gomez, but his shot was again blocked and cleared out of the area.
UConn (9-3-4, 4-2-1 BIG EAST) scored both of its goals in a four-minute span. The first was a converted penalty by Sabri Hanni. The second came after a Butler defender made a save at the goal line. The ball remained in play, directly in front of the goal, and after two quick passes, Balthazar Saunders punched one in from eight yards out.
Butler will play its final match of the regular season on the road at St. John's, on Friday, Nov. 7.
Tonight's loss drops Butler to 5-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 in BIG EAST play, with seven points in the conference rankings. With only one match remaining on the schedule, and because six teams currently have 13 or more points, the Bulldogs have now dropped out of BIG EAST Tournament contention.
