Butler Softball Drops Two on Day One on the Gulf Coast

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Butler softball team lost games to Bethune-Cookman and Binghamton on day one of the Make-It-Happen Games in Florida. The Bulldogs (9-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) were shut out, 2-0, by the Wildcats (5-13, 0-0 Southwest Athletic). In the following game, a seventh-inning rally by the Dawgs came up just short as the Bearcats (6-5, 0-0 American East) held on for a 3-2 win.
 
 
Game 1: Bethune-Cookman 2, Butler 0 (7 innings)
 
After four scoreless innings, Bethune-Cookman struck first. A two-RBI single put the Wildcats up, 2-0, after five complete.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Butler advanced a runner to second but could not push any across.
 
Katie Petran (3-1) started in the circle for Butler. She lasted into the fifth inning and took the loss. In 4.2 innings, she allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four. Rylyn Dyer (2.1 IP, 2H, 4K) entered in the fifth, with two outs and a runner on first, and kept the Wildcats scoreless though the final out.
 
 
Game 2: Binghamton 3, Butler 2 (7 innings)
 
Binghamton scored first after creating a bases-loaded rundown in the third inning. The following inning, an error, followed by two base hits, put the Bearcats up, 2-0.
 
In the fifth inning, a Binghamton batter who was hit-by-pitch ultimately reached home after a base hit and an infield error. The Bearcats' lead was 3-0.
 
In the seventh, Butler had runners on first and second when Ella White hit a two-RBI triple down the right-field line. The Dawgs had runners on second and third before the game ended with a pair of strikeouts.
 
Gwen Baker (3-1) started in the circle for Butler and took the loss. In 5.0 innings, she allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Kayla Noerr (1.0 IP, BB) provided relief, facing three batters in the sixth inning.
 
 
Bulldog Bits
  • Ella White's triple vs. Binghamton was her first of the season and the seventh of her career. She is now tied for sixth on Butler's All-Time list.
  • White's two RBI gives her 14 this season and 118 in her career. She is now second on Butler's All-Time list for career RBI. (Erin Falkenberry ('09-'12) is first with 140.)
  • White had three walks today giving her a career total of 92. She now tops the All-Time list for walks in a career.
  • Paige Dorsett's double vs. Binghamton was her second of the season and the 24th of her career.
  • Cate Lehner had a stolen base in each game, giving her nine for the season and 52 in her career.

Butler remains in Madeira Beach for day two at the Make-It-Happen Games. On the schedule for Saturday is a doubleheader with UAlbany.
