Winders Punches Out Eight, Butler Downs Marshall 7-2

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Butler took down the Marshall Thundering Herd 7-2 on Saturday afternoon in game two of the series. Behind a stellar outing from Max Winders, BU held Marshall scoreless over the final three innings of the game. With the win, Butler improves to 3-7 on the season while Marshall slides to 3-6. Tomorrow's rubber match is slated to start at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+. 

BULLDOG HIGHLIGHTS
  • Corbin Snyder tossed four solid innings allowing only two hits and one earned run while punching out one. 
  • Winders was sensational for Butler, tossing five innings allowing one hit and one run while punching out eight. 
  • Gavin Gilmore scored a run and earned a walk. 
  • David Ayers was 2-for-4 with two runs scored an RBI and a homer. 
  • Will White scored a run and earned a walk. 
  • Will Burgess earned a walk, scored a run and tallied an RBI.
  • Alex Christie went 2-for-4 with a run scored. 
  • Charlie Schebler tallied three RBIs and a home run. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thundering Herd struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scratching across a run on one hit. The lead didn't last long for Marshall; Ayers hit a leadoff solo shot to deep right field in the top of the second, evening the score at 1-1. With two outs in the frame, Butler had runners on the corners and executed a double steal to perfection. BU took the 2-1 lead into the top of third after keeping Marshall off the board.
  • Marshall threatened in the bottom of the third as the home side had runners on first and second with one out. A 6-4-3 got the Dawgs out of the jam as the Bulldog lead stayed intact heading into the top of the fourth. 
  • The Bulldog offense exploded in the top half of the fourth after starting the inning with back-to-back outs. A walk and a single put two on for the Dawgs when Schebler stepped up to the dish. The junior belted a three-run homer to deep right field giving the Dawgs a 5-1 advantage. BU held Marshall scoreless in the bottom half of the inning as the four-run lead stood after four innings of action. 
  • The fifth was scoreless for both sides. Marshall cut into the BU lead with a leadoff solo shot in the sixth. Butler was able to shut down the Thundering Herd offense the rest of the frame as the Bulldog lead stood at three heading into the seventh. 
  • The seventh was scoreless for both sides as Winders struck out the Marshall side in order. Butler loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth. A fielder's choice brought a run home for BU before the Dawgs pulled off another double steal. Butler took the 7-2 lead into the top of the ninth after fending off the Marshall offense in the bottom of the frame. 
  • Butler was able to shut the door on the Thundering Herd as Winders was nails in the final frame. BU secured the 7-2 victory, setting up a rubber match on Sunday afternoon. 
 
OF NOTE
  • Ayers hit his third homer of the season. 
  • Winders tallied eight strikeouts. 
  • Butler recorded eight hits to Marshall's five. 
 
UP NEXT
Butler and Marshall will play game three of the three-game set tomorrow in Huntington, West Virginia. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
