Dawgs Drop Rubber Match against Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Butler fell to Marshall 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the series. The Bulldog offense was held in check for most of the game, and a late push in the final inning wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. The loss drops BU to 3-8 on the season, while Marshall improves to 4-6.

BULLDOG HIGHLIGHTS

  • Logan Wiley got the start for Butler on the mound. The junior southpaw threw four strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first two frames were scoreless for both sides. In the third, Marshall struck first with a solo home run to give the Herd a 1-0 advantage.

  • The fourth inning was also scoreless. Kenyon Collins was dominating on the mound for Marshall, recording six strikeouts and limiting Butler to just two baserunners through the first four innings.

  • Schebler recorded the first hit of the day for Butler with a single in the fifth. Two batters later, Logan Crock laced a single to put runners at the corners. BU was unable to take advantage of the scoring opportunity, as Marshall maintained a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth.

  • The seventh was more of the same, as both sides went down in order. The Thundering Herd clung to a one-run lead heading into the final two innings.

  • After a scoreless top half of the eighth for the Bulldogs, Marshall added some insurance runs courtesy of a two-run homer. The Thundering Herd took a 3-0 lead heading into the final frame.

  • Butler began the ninth with back-to-back singles from Gavin and Gilmore. A one-out walk loaded the bases with Schebler due up next. Schebler drove in Butler's first run with an RBI groundout, but with two outs and the winning run at the plate, Connor Sackett struck out to end the game. Marshall secured the 3-1 win.
