HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE

  • Winders delivered a scoreless 1-2-3 inning to begin the game. Gavin got the Butler offense started with a leadoff single, which was immediately followed by a two-run homer off the bat of Rhoades to put BU on the board. A bunt single from Gilmore put Ayers at the plate, who hit his fourth home run of the season to give Butler a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs would score another run courtesy of an RBI double from Baker to score Christie. Butler took a 5-0 lead heading into the second inning.

  • After another shutout inning from Winders, Ayers hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to give Butler an 8-0 advantage through two.

  • Winders continued his dominant start, setting down the MSU batters in order for the third straight inning. Butler built upon its lead with a five-run bottom of the third. With two outs and the bags loaded, Gilmore delivered with an RBI single. In the ensuing at bat, Ayers hit a bases-clearing three RBI double, pushing his total to eight RBIs on the day. Butler responded with a two-run double from Connors in the bottom half of the inning but was unable to scratch anymore across.
