Hamlin Made BIG EAST History In Butler’s Successful Day Two of BIG EAST Indoor Championships

The Butler track and field team earned multiple medals on both sides during the final day of events at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in Chicago, Ill. Saturday afternoon.
 
On the track, Jesse Hamlin secured the gold in the men's mile with a time of 4:15.14. Hamlin makes history as the first BIG EAST athlete to have ever won the 5000, mile, and 4x800 relay. Hamlin was awarded the BIG EAST Most Outsanding Track Performer and High Point Performer. 
 
Austin Gabay earned the bronze in the men's mile event with a time of 4:16.51. Owen Whitney rounded out the Dawgs' top ten finishes placing tenth with a time of 4:22.86. 
 
The men's 4x800-meter relay team of Ryan Elston, Aedan Rendek, Gabay, and Hamlin earned the gold with a time of 7:27.87, breaking the previous school record of 7:30.85. 
 
Joe Pierro brought home a bronze medal in the men's 200-meter race. Pierro recorded a time of 21.45 seconds. 
 
Cabott Craft led the Bulldogs in the field earning a bronze medal in the men's triple jump. Craft jumped 14.51 meters to earn the podium placement. 
 
On the women's side, Anna Niebrugge earned two bronze medals in the women's 60-meter race and 200-meter race. Niebrugge tied her school record in the 60-meter with a time of 7.54 seconds and set the school record in the women's 200-meter with a time of 24.03 seconds. 
 
The Bulldog men placed third out of nine teams with a score of 91 points. This marks the second highest finish in program history behind a second place finish in 2024. The women finished seventh out of 10 teams with a score of 26 points.
 
Other top Bulldog performers included:
 
  • Four Bulldogs finished fifth through ninth in the men's 3000-meter race. David Slapak received fifth with a time of 8:07.14. Seth Mahony placed seventh with a time of 8:07.28. William Zegarski came in eighth with a time of 8:07.30. Matteo Rosio rounded out the Dawgs in ninth with a time of 8:07.86.
  • Poppy Healy earned fourth in the women's 800-meter race with a time of 2:08.40. 
  • Elston earned sixth in the men's 800-meter race with a time of 1:49.77.
  • Edward Mumford received fifth in the men's high jump event with a length of 1.91 meters.

The Bulldogs will wait to see if any individuals had qualifying times for the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. on Mar. 13-14. For the rest of the team, they will gear up for the outdoor season beginning at the Blizzard Buster in Miami, Ohio on Mar. 20.
