Ronald Nored, who has built an extensive coaching résumé in the NBA for more than a decade, has been hired as the head coach of the men's basketball program at his alma mater Butler University.
Butler Vice President and Director of Athletics Grant Leiendecker made the announcement Wednesday, March 25. Nored will be re-introduced to the Butler and Indianapolis communities Friday, March 27 with a noon event at Hinkle Fieldhouse that is open to the public.
Nored is a 2012 Butler graduate who helped the Bulldogs to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA national championship game as the starting point guard for coach Brad Stevens and concluded his playing career by earning Academic All-America honors in 2012. Nored has been part of coaching staffs with five NBA franchises, most recently serving as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks for the last three seasons.
"The term 'dream job' doesn't do justice to how I feel about the opportunity to lead the Butler program," said Nored. "Butler is an incredibly special place. As a player, I poured blood, sweat and tears into this program. No one appreciates both the responsibility and the potential that comes with this position more than me. Passionate fans, Hinkle Fieldhouse, the BIG EAST, storied tradition, a world-class education, a thriving city… there is incredible momentum at Butler right now and I can't wait to hit the ground running as we elevate Butler to new heights."
"In a rapidly evolving college basketball landscape, our priority was identifying the absolute best leader to spearhead the future of Butler Basketball. Ronald Nored is that leader," said Leiendecker.
"Ron is a relentless worker with an elite basketball IQ and a proven track record of developing talent at the highest level of basketball. He is the ultimate competitor, and he will cultivate that same quality within his team and staff. He is a gifted relationship builder who commands respect through his character and his craft. While he understands the soul of this university, we didn't hire him for his history here—we hired him for his vision of what we can become and how we will get there. His experience in the NBA provides us with a distinct competitive advantage as we navigate this new era of college basketball. He will attract an elite staff and student-athletes and build deep relationships within the Butler and Indianapolis communities. I have total confidence that Ron will put his own fingerprints on this program, set a new standard for our student-athletes, and elevate Butler Basketball to new heights."
Nored's NBA coaching career began in 2013 when Stevens brought him to the Boston Celtics organization, first as an assistant coach with the Maine Celtics of the NBA G-League and then as a member of the Celtics coaching staff, focusing on player development and scouting, during the 2014-15 season.
In addition to spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks under coach Quin Snyder, Nored spent two seasons as a member of Rick Carlisle's staff with the Indiana Pacers (2021-23) and three seasons with the Charlotte Hornets under head coach James Borrego (2018-21). Nored served as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets' G-League team, the Long Island Nets, for two seasons (2016-18). His experience also includes the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach at Northern Kentucky University and his first head coach position at Brownsburg (Ind.) High School in 2012-13, immediately following his graduation from Butler.
"We are excited to welcome Ron, Danielle and their family back to Butler," said Butler President
James M. Danko. "Ron is a shining example of a Bulldog who was built at Butler while also positively impacting others and the university during his time as an undergrad. His talent and work ethic have allowed him to be successful on the greatest basketball stage in the world, working alongside the best athletes and coaches in the sport. I can't wait to see the impact that Ron can have on his alma mater and our basketball program in this leadership role."
As a student-athlete at Butler, Nored helped the Bulldogs to two NCAA national championship game appearances, three NCAA Tournaments and 109 wins during his four-year playing career. He is Butler's career leader in games played (143) and postseason games played (16). He was twice named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year as his 207 career steals still rank first in Butler program history. His 497 career assists are third in program history. As a senior during the 2011-12 season, Nored earned Academic All-America second-team honors and Lowe's Senior CLASS Award first-team All-American recognition. Nored's classmates voted him as the freshman class president at Butler during his first year on campus.
Nored graduated from Butler in 2012 with a degree in Early/Middle Childhood Education. He and his wife, Danielle, have four children: Avery, Kai, Jude, and Campbell.
