Biography

2022-23 SEASON: Started all 26 of the games he played in...tied for second on the team in scoring with an average of 11.6 points per game, which placed him 29th in the BIG EAST...his rebounding average of 5.5 per game led the team and was 19th in the BIG EAST...shot 61.9 percent from the field, which was 11th nationally and third in the BIG EAST...his 49 blocks led the team and are tied for fourth on Butler's single-season list...averaged 1.88 blocks per game, which was 29th in the NCAA and third in the BIG EAST...scored in double figures 15 times...led the team in scoring six times and in rebounding nine times...had three games with 10 or more rebounds which contributed to three double-doubles...had a season-high 25 points and season-high 11 rebounds in the team's season-opening win over New Orleans Nov. 7...went 12-for-15 from the field in that game...had 22 points (on 9-for-11 shooting) and 10 rebounds in the Nov. 30 win over Kansas State...his third double-double came Nov. 14 at Penn State (16 points and 10 rebounds)...scored 22 points to go along with seven rebounds in the Dec. 6 win over Yale...twice named to the five-member BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll...once on Nov. 14 after his performance in the season-opener against New Orleans and also Dec. 12 after games against Yale and California...had five blocks twice (vs. The Citadel Nov. 19 and in the Feb. 10 win over Xavier)...had 14 games with multiple blocked shots...handed out four assists twice (in the Nov. 24 win over BYU as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis and in the Feb. 7 win over St. John's)...averaged 1.4 assists per game...his average of 27.9 points per game was fifth on the team.

2021-22 SEASON (AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE): Started the season opener vs. Bucknell Nov. 9 and sustained season-ending shoulder injury in the first minute of the game.
 
2020-21 SEASON (AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE): Appeared in 24 games, making 23 starts…averaged 9.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game…led team in both rebounds and blocks…led ACC in blocks and finished 11th in the NCAA…had multiple blocked shots in 15 games, including 11 games with three or more blocks…shot 64.1 percent from the field, hitting 100-of-156 field goal attempts…the field goal percentage was best single-season percentage in program history (minimum 100 made field goals)...shot 68.6 percent from the free throw line, improving over 20 percentage points from his freshman campaign…led the team in blocks 19 times, rebounds nine times, scoring once and assists once…had 11 games scoring in double figures and pulled down 10 or more rebounds twice…had one double-double…posted season-highs of 20 points and eight blocks at Saint Louis Dec. 17…eight blocks tied for the fourth-most in a single game in program history…had 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting, seven rebounds and five blocks in the win over North Carolina Dec. 22…had nine points and a then career-high 10 rebounds vs. Miami Jan. 9…scored 10 points, blocked seven shots and had six rebounds at North Carolina Jan. 23…posted double-double with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting and season-high 14 rebounds (along with four blocks) at Syracuse Jan. 31…combined to go 13-for-14 from the field in two NIT games, scoring 14 points against Davidson March 18 and 13 points vs. Colorado State March 25.

2019-20 SEASON (AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE): Saw action in 29 games, making 26 starts…averaged 5.1 points per game on 65.7-percent shooting…averaged 4.0 rebounds per game and ranked second on the team with 50 offensive rebounds…led ACC and ranked sixth in the NCAA with 2.93 blocks per game average…83 blocked shots are the most by a freshman in program history and are the third-most in a single season in program history…had multiple blocked shots in 25 of 29 games, including the first 17 of the season…only the second player in program history to lead the ACC in blocks and the first player in program history to lead the ACC in blocks in conference games…led the NCAA in block percentage in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings…had season-best seven blocked shots in the win over Detroit Mercy Nov. 10…seven blocked shots tied for the sixth-most in a single game in program history and tied for second-most in a game in PNC Arena history…led team in blocks in 23 games and in rebounding four times…scored in double figures four times…had one double-double…had five blocks in program debut against Georgia Tech Nov. 5…had first career double-digit game with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in win over FIU Nov. 13…scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting and added seven rebounds and four blocks in the win at Miami Feb. 5…registered his first career double-double with season-best in points (13) and rebounds (10) in win over Pittsburgh Feb. 29.

2018-19 SEASON: Redshirted the season due to injury.

HIGH SCHOOL: Consensus four-star recruit…ranked as the No. 78 overall player in his class by ESPN…ranked as No. 101 overall player by 247Sports…his playing time as a senior was limited after having shoulder surgery…McDonald’s All-American Nominee and Under Armour All-American nominee…as a junior, led Northwood Temple Academy to NCISAA IA State Semifinals…spent his sophomore season at Jack Britt High School…played AAU basketball for Team Felton…averaged 8.4 points on 64-percent shooting, 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 blocks in 17 games for Team Felton in the spring of 2017.

PERSONAL: Son of Carlos and Katie Bates…has an older brother, Glenn.
