Greg Oden joined Thad Matta's staff when the veteran coach took over the Butler program in 2022. In his two seasons with the Bulldogs, Oden has helped Butler to a postseason berth as the team made the 2024 NIT.
Originally hired as the program's director of basketball operations in April of 2022, Oden moved into an assistant coaching role when the NCAA expanded the number of staff members who could serve as on-court instructors.
Oden served as a graduate assistant on the Ohio State staff during the 2021-22 season. He initially returned to Ohio State prior to the 2016-17 season and worked as a student coach for one season and as a student manager for two seasons while completing his sport industry degree. He received his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University in the spring of 2019.
Oden was the Naismith Prep Player of the Year coming out of Lawrence North High School and was dominant in his one season with Matta and the Buckeyes in 2006-07, leading OSU to the national championship game. He averaged 15.7 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game while earning All-Big Ten first team honors. He was named the NABC Defensive Player of the Year, the Pete Newell Big Man Award winner and a consensus second team All-American.
Following that season, he was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Portland Trailblazers. Oden spent five seasons in Portland and one season in Miami before injuries limited his professional career.
During his time starring at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Oden led the team to three consecutive Indiana Class 4A state championships. He was selected as the 2006 Indiana Mr. Basketball. Oden was also named a McDonald's All-American and was the Gatorade National Player of the Year in both 2005 and 2006.
Oden and his wife, Sabrina, were married in 2017 and have one daughter, Londyn.
