Ronald Nored, who has built an extensive coaching résumé in the NBA for more than a decade, was hired as the head coach of the men’s basketball program at his alma mater Butler University in March of 2026.
Nored is a 2012 Butler graduate who helped the Bulldogs to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA national championship game as the starting point guard for coach Brad Stevens and concluded his playing career by earning Academic All-America honors in 2012. Nored has been part of coaching staffs with five NBA franchises, most recently serving as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks for the last three seasons.
Nored’s NBA coaching career began in 2013 when Stevens brought him to the Boston Celtics organization, first as an assistant coach with the Maine Celtics of the NBA G-League and then as a member of the Celtics coaching staff, focusing on player development and scouting, during the 2014-15 season.
In addition to spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks under coach Quin Snyder, Nored spent two seasons as a member of Rick Carlisle’s staff with the Indiana Pacers (2021-23) and three seasons with the Charlotte Hornets under head coach James Borrego (2018-21). Nored served as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets’ G-League team, the Long Island Nets, for two seasons (2016-18). His experience also includes the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach at Northern Kentucky University and his first head coach position at Brownsburg (Ind.) High School in 2012-13, immediately following his graduation from Butler.
As a student-athlete at Butler, Nored helped the Bulldogs to two NCAA national championship game appearances, three NCAA Tournaments and 109 wins during his four-year playing career. He is Butler’s career leader in games played (143) and postseason games played (16). He was twice named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year as his 207 career steals still rank first in Butler program history. His 497 career assists are third in program history. As a senior during the 2011-12 season, Nored earned Academic All-America second-team honors and Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award first-team All-American recognition. Nored’s classmates voted him as the freshman class president at Butler during his first year on campus.
