Terry Johnson enters his 11th season as an assistant coach at Butler. He is in his 13th total season on the Butler sidelines having also filled an administrative role for two seasons early in his coaching career.
Johnson is involved in all parts of the program, while also serving as the team's defensive coordinator.
In Johnson’s 10 seasons as a Butler assistant coach, the Bulldogs have made eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including back-to-back Final Fours in 2010 and 2011. Butler has also captured four conference regular season championships, three league tournament titles, and made one appearance in the CBI. He’s helped the Bulldogs achieve a “Top 25” national ranking in eight of his 10 seasons, while helping the Bulldogs to four of the “Top 5” records in school history. During his tenure, Butler has had seven players earn Academic All-America recognition, and the Bulldogs have sent two players to the NBA.
Overall, Butler is 250-97 in the 10 seasons since Johnson became an assistant coach. That success was part of the reason that Johnson was invited to be part of the Villa 7 Consortium in 2015, which brings together university athletic directors and the country’s elite assistant coaches in an effort to prepare the next generation of college basketball leaders.
Johnson returned to Butler in April of 2007 after he spent the 2006-07 season as assistant coach at IPFW under then head coach Dane Fife. From the summer of 2004 through the 2005-06 season, he was director of basketball operations at Butler.
Prior to his 2004-06 position as Butler’s director of basketball operations, Johnson served in an administrative position at Auburn (2003-04), and coached at Lincoln Trail Junior College (2001-03) and Indiana Tech (1999-2001). Johnson began his coaching career at IPFW (1997-1999).
A three-sport athlete at Anderson (Ind.) High School, Johnson played both basketball and baseball at Lincoln Trail in Robinson, Ill., 1992-94. He was the first Lincoln Trail athlete to be named All-Conference in two sports, and he earned honorable mention All-America recognition in basketball. He went on to play both sports at Lamar University in Texas, 1994-96, and he led the basketball team at Lamar in assists and steals for two straight years.
Johnson earned his Bachelor’s degree from IPFW in 1998. He played baseball for the Mastodons and was named All-Conference, team MVP, and Co-Male Athlete of the Year. He played professional baseball with the Tri-City Posse (Pasco, Wash.) in the Western League for two years and with the Anderson Lawmen in the Heartland League for one year. He earned a Master's degree in sports administration in August, 2011, from Western Kentucky.
Johnson and his wife, Kristen, are parents of three young boys, twins Jalen and Jordan, and Caden.
