Biography

2024-25 SEASON AT BUTLER: One of two Bulldogs to start all 35 games...finished third on the team in scoring at 11.2 points per game...his scoring average was 25th in the BIG EAST...made a team-high 77 three-pointers on the season...his average of 2.2 made three-pointers per game was sixth in the BIG EAST...made five three-pointers against both Austin Peay Nov. 8 and Eastern Illinois Dec. 3...made multiple three-pointers in 22 of the team's 35 games...shot 41.6 percent from three-point range, which was second on the team...shot 43 percent from the field and 86 percent from the free throw line...averaged 4.3 rebounds per game, which was fourth on the team...scored in double figures in 22 games...had three games scoring at least 20 points: 23 vs. Austin Peay Nov. 8, 20 vs. Eastern Illinois Dec. 3, and 21 vs. Creighton Jan. 11...led the team in scoring seven times...led the team in rebounding six times...had one double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds at St. John's Jan. 4...had five assists against both DePaul Jan. 25 and Georgetown Feb. 15...recorded the 500th rebound of his collegiate career in the Feb. 8 game vs. Providence...selected to the 2025 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament following the season...selected to participate in the E*TRADE Men's 3-Point Championship as part of the 2025 State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships event as part of Final Four weekend in San Antonio.

2023-24 SEASON AT IOWA: Team recipient of the Chris Street Award…saw action in 31 games, making 15 starts…missed three games due to injury…averaged 8.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game…had 14 games scoring in double figures, including a pair of 20-point games…shot 78.8 percent from the free throw line…reached 1,000 career points Feb. 27 against Penn State…scored a season-high 22 points in the Nov. 10 win over Alabama State…went 7-for-12 from the field in totaling 21 points against Minnesota Feb. 11…scored 19 points (on 7-for-9 shooting) at Utah in the NIT March 24 in his final game at Iowa…the Utah season finale was one of three times he led the team in scoring during the season…had five games with five or more rebounds.
 
2022-23 SEASON AT IOWA: Played in 27 games, including starting the first 14 games of the season…averaged 9.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 0.8 steals per contest…scored double figures 11 times, including topping 20 points five times…posted first career double-double vs. Eastern Illinois Dec. 21 (12 points; 13 rebounds)…netted a personal-best 24 points Dec. 11 vs. Wisconsin…scored a game-high 21 points in Nov. 25 win over Clemson…drained a career-best six three-pointers against Nebraska March 5…posted career-bests in steals (5) and blocks (2) at No. 1 Purdue Feb. 9…named to the Emerald Coast Classic All-Tournament Team…team’s honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. 
 
2021-22 SEASON AT IOWA: Co-winner of the team’s Kenny Arnold Hawkeye Spirit Award…started all 32 games played…ranked third on the team in points (10.5), fourth each in rebounds per contest (3.6), three-pointers made (33) and blocks (0.5) per game…netted double figures 21 times…scored a season-high 18 points twice (vs. Minnesota Feb. Feb. 6 and vs. Richmond March 17 in the NCAA Tournament)…played a career-high 37 minutes, totaling 16 points and seven rebounds at Penn State Jan. 31…led the team in scoring in its NCAA Tournament game versus Richmond, making a personal-best four three-pointers…averaged 8.8 points in four Big Ten Tournament games…tallied 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 at the foul line versus Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
 
2020-21 SEASON AT IOWA: Earned the team’s Most Improved Player Award…played in all 31 games…averaged 5.2 points and 2.7 rebounds…scored in double figures six times…led team in steals five times and blocks four times…shot 50 percent or better in five of Iowa’s last six contests, including all four postseason games…tallied 10 points and two rebounds against Oregon in the NCAA Tournament Second Round…netted six points and snagged two rebounds in first career NCAA Tournament game of his career versus Grand Canyon…posted season-highs in scoring (19), three-pointers made (3), rebounds (6), and field goals made (8) in victory over Nebraska March 4…registered 16 points in season-opening win over North Carolina Central Nov. 25.
 
2019-20 SEASON AT IOWA: Saw limited action in two games…missed the remainder of the season due to health and wellness and received a medical redshirt.
 
HIGH SCHOOL: Iowa City West High School’s all-time leading scorer…finalist for 2019 Des Moines Register’s All-Iowa Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year…finalist for the 2019 Cedar Rapids Gazette Male Athlete of the Year…ranked as the 60th-best recruit in the nation according to ESPN.com…helped lead West HS to the 2017 4A State Championship; state runner-up finishes in 2016 and 2018; state tournament appearance in 2019…won a combined 86 games during his four-year career, winning 21 or more games in each of his four seasons…two-time team captain (2018, 2019)…first team all-state, all-conference, and all-sub state as a junior and senior…second team all-state, first team all-conference, and first team all-sub state as a sophomore…averaged 25.1 points per game (58.2 field goal percentage) and 7.6 rebounds as a senior, 19.9 points and six rebounds per game as a junior, and 13.8 points and five rebounds as a sophomore…shot better than 50 percent during his prep career…three-year starter and four-year letterwinner…member of the USA Basketball 3-on-3 Youth Olympics team that competed in Brazil in October, 2018…invited for USA Basketball U18 Trials…selected to compete for the US All-Stars at the Capital Hoops Classic in Washington, D.C., registering 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists in a starting role…competed on D1 Minnesota’s AAU team the summer of 2019…high school coach was Steve Bergman.
 
PERSONAL: Son of Fran and Margaret McCaffery…father is Iowa’s head men’s basketball coach and played basketball at Wake Forest and Penn…mother was an All-American basketball player at Notre Dame (maiden name is Nowlin)…has three siblings, Connor, Marit, and Jack…played alongside older brother, Connor, as a Hawkeye…Connor is now a member of Butler's coaching staff after spending the 2023-24 season working for the Indiana Pacers…Jack has signed to play at Butler, beginning with the 2025-26 season...earned a bachelor’s degree at Iowa in sport and recreation management (coaching and sport instruction).
