INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler baseball team will host Marian today at 4 p.m. The game has been moved to Bishop Chatard H.S. due to heavy amounts of snow still covering Bulldog Park. This weekend will feature Butler hosting IPFW for a three-game series that begins on Friday, March 7. First pitch for game one of the series is set for 3 p.m.
Scouting Marian
Thursday's game vs. Butler will be the season opener for Marian. The Knights posted a 12-27 record a year ago.
A Look at IPFW
IPFW is off to a 3-7 start to the 2014 season under the guidance of Head Coach Bobby Pierce. The team split a pair of doubleheaders at Alabama A&M on opening weekend and then traveled to Southeast Missouri State for a three-game series at Cape Girardeau. The Redhawks handed IPFW three-straight losses, but the 'Dons moved forward to earn an 11-8 win over Missouri at the UALR Round Robin. The win was the only victory of the weekend as IPFW settled into 3-7 by losing to UIC and Arkansas-Little Rock.
Key players in the IPFW lineup include Kevin Wirth, Kristian Gayday, Tyler Shepherd, Shane Trevino and Carter DeBoe. Wirth has been consistent for IPFW as he leads the team with a .343 batting average. The team leader in RBIs, (11) Wirth has 12 hits on the season including two doubles and one home run.
Gayday provides IPFW with power at the plate as he holds the team lead in home runs early in the year with two. Shepherd is a speedy outfielder that keeps pitchers on their toes once he reaches base. The team leader in steals, Shepherd has swiped five bags on seven attempts.
Trevino and DeBoe are two more good bats for IPFW in the middle of the lineup. The tandem has started in all 10 games for the 'Dons this year with Trevino hitting .278 and DeBoe close behind at .275. Each player has two doubles and DeBoe has one of four IPFW home runs on the year.
Samford Series
Butler lost three close games in Birmingham while playing at Samford and against Purdue. The first game of the weekend was the most lopsided of the series as Samford set the tone with a 6-2 victory. The 'Dogs faced Purdue on Saturday as the Boilermakers squeaked out a 3-2 win. The final game was a tough break for the Bulldogs as a late ninth inning rally came up just short in a 10-9 setback.
Call on Calderon
Head Coach Steve Farley has been able to count on Marcos Calderon as a key player in the Butler lineup. A starter in all eight games, Calderon leads the team with a .406 batting average (13-32) and five runs scored. He has three doubles, one triple and one home run on the season to post four RBIs.
Allen with the Win
Kyle Allen recorded the win on the mound for Butler when the Bulldogs defeated Illinois State opening weekend. Allen has made four mound appearances out of the bullpen for the 'Dogs. He posts a 2.45 ERA and has nine strikeouts in 11 innings of work.
Winter Weather
Today's game vs. Marian was originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 5. The game was moved back a day due to removing snow from the playing field. Bishop Chatard H.S. has a turf field that will help the teams get their games completed.
