Visiting San Diego used a stout defense and an early 14-0 lead to propel to a 44-10 victory Saturday afternoon at the Butler Bowl. With the win, San Diego improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pioneer Football League. Butler falls to 2-3 (0-2 PFL).
 
The Toreros had 526 yards on the afternoon, led by 326 yards passing from Anthony Lawrence and 128 yards on the ground from Jonah Hodges.
 


San Diego jumped out to a 14-0 lead with a 92-yard drive that ended with a Tevin Heyward 1-yard plunge, and a quick-hitting drive that culminated in a 32-yard connection from Anthony Lawrence that Brian Riley hauled in with one hand.
 
Leading 17-0 at the half after Butler's defense stiffened in the second quarter, San Diego used three touchdowns within a six-minute period late in the third quarter leading into the fourth quarter to take a commanding lead.
 
Will Marty got his first career start under center in a Butler uniform. He had 177 yards through the air, including a 13-yard connection with Cord Collier in the fourth quarter for his first career touchdown toss. Marty connected with Pace Temple seven times for 94 yards.
 
Cornerback Mike Cerone had nine tackles and an interception for the Bulldogs.
 
Butler returns to action Saturday (Oct. 8) with another PFL contest at the Butler Bowl. The 1 p.m. game against Marist is also Homecoming on the Butler campus.
