INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler Bulldogs took down the Villanova Wildcats 3-1 at Hinkle Fieldhouse Friday night (25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 25-23). The victory moves the 'Dawgs overall record to 14-10, and 3-5 in BIG EAST play.
Three different Bulldogs turned in double-double performances in the match.
Makayla Ferguson recorded 47 assists to go along with 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the year.
Anna Logan registered a team-high 17 kills and chipped in 14 digs. It was the outside hitter's 11th double-double of the 2016 campaign.
Whitney Beck rounded out the double-double performers with 11 kills of her own and a team high 20 digs. Beck now has four double-doubles on the year, three of which have come in her last three matches.
The first set featured a dominant showcase of offense by the Bulldogs, who led from start to finish. Butler opened the set with a commanding 10-2 lead. Later, a kill from
Bri Lilly extended the Butler lead to 17-7. Lilly finished the set with three kills and a perfect hitting percentage. Villanova fought back to get within four at 20-16, but a Butler timeout halted their momentum, and allowed Butler to finish off the Wildcats 25-18 to take a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs hit an impressive .730 for the set.
Villanova knotted the match back at 1-1 in the second set in a back-and-forth affair that featured 10 ties and four lead changes. The two teams traded points until the Wildcats scored three-straight points to go ahead 19-16. Butler interrupted the scoring streak with a point of their own before surrendering four-straight points, dropping the set 25-18.
Butler reclaimed their lead in the match with a 25-21 win in set three. The third set played out similar to the second with both teams trading points early. At 13-13,
Brooke Gregory's kill gave the 'Dawgs a lead they would not relinquish. Logan and Beck paced Butler's offensive attack, registering six and four kills, respectively.
The fourth set went down to the wire, with the Bulldogs earning a hard-fought 25-23 win to defeat the Wildcats. Set four saw 11 ties and three lead changes. With the teams deadlocked at 23-23,
