Cleveland – Butler men's tennis traveled to Cleveland this weekend to participate in the 2016 Viking invitational. The tournament consisted of singles and doubles play and the Bulldogs saw success in both sections.
Ari Gerstein got off to a good start in singles action. He would win his first two matches against an opponent from NIU (1-6, 7-5, 10-6) and JC (6-1, 6-0) before falling to an opponent from CSU (6-2, 6-4).
Aviv Ben Shabat also enjoyed early success. Shabat started singles play with a first round bye and knocked off an opponent from MSU (6-4, 6-2). Shabat would lose his next match to a player from NIU (7-5, 6-1). His singles record would end at 2-1.
The pair of Gerstein and Shabat was the most successful of the weekend. The tandem took a first round bye into back-to-back 6-0 victories over their opponents. The two would advance all the way to the finals of the invitational following a 6-3 victory over a pair from NIU. Gerstein and Shabat would fall in the final match to a duo from NIU, and finished their weekend at 3-1.
Mason Dragos was also a force in singles action. He would pick up victories in his first two matches over opponents from YSU (6-3, 6-2) and NIU (6-4, 6-4). Dragos was then defeated by a different opponent from NIU, in a tough, three set match (7-6 [3], 4-6, 10-6).
Mikheil Khmiadashvili also picked up two match victories in singles play. He would defeat opponents from YSU and CWRU before losing to an opponent from NIU. Khmiadashvili would finish 2-1 for the tournament.
Sophomore Dragos and senior Khmiadashvili also enjoyed a first round bye in the doubles side of the invitational. The pair would win their first two matches over opponents from YSU and NIU. The winning streak would end in the semi-finals however when a duo from NIU took down the 'Dawgs, 6-4. Dragos and Khimadashvili would finish their invite with a record of 2-1.
Spencer Lang would pick up a win in his first matchup of singles play for the weekend. Lang defeated an opponent from MSU (7-5, 6-3) before falling in a second round matchup against an opponent from NIU (3-6, 6-2, 10-1). Lang then took to the backdraw where he also fell to a player from CW.
Adrian Mag saw tremendous success in singles action. Following a loss Mag moved to the backdraw where he won three straight matches to put him in the finals against an opponent from YSU. Mag lost the match in the end, but battled hard (6-2, 3-6, 10-7).
Lang and Mag then teamed up and following a first round loss, they moved to the backdraw. Lang and Mag would win their first matchup to two from CW (6-3). The duo would then drop their next match to a duo from CSU and it made their record for the weekend 1-2 as a tandem.
Freshman
Samuel Sullivan finished with a record of 1-2 for the tournament. Sullivan picked up a win over YSU (6-3, 6-2) before losing to an NIU player (6-1, 6-2). Sullivan also lost to a CSU opponent in the first round of backdraw action (7-5, 7-6).
The Bulldogs have yet to announce their next competition at this time.
