MILWAUKEE / CHICAGO -- The Butler men's tennis team played a pair of matches against BIG EAST competition this weekend with road contests at Marquette and DePaul. The team took a 5-2 loss at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium, followed by a close 4-3 setback at DePaul.
The weekend got underway with a match at Marquette. Mason Dragos earned an impressive victory at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2 while Mikheil Khmiadashvili picked up a win at No. 3 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Alex Woldmoe and Adrian Mag made things interested at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but the Golden Eagles were able to build on their lead by holding off each Butler student-athlete in three sets.
Woldmoe was knocked off at No. 5 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Mag took the loss at No. 6 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
The team returned to action on Sunday with a road match at DePaul. The contest came down to No. 1 singles, but in the end the Blue Demons would get a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 win out of Sten Leusink to edge BU 4-3.
The doubles point went to DePaul with the Blue Demons winning the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Alex Woldmoe and Ari Gerstein were defeated 7-5 while the duo of Adrian Mag and Spencer Lang were retired 6-3. Butler didn't get the point, but they did record a win at No. 1 with Khmiadashvili and Dragos winning 6-3 over Kyle Johnson and Paul John.
The first point of the day would be the deciding factor as each team won three single matches. BU grabbed wins at No. 2, 4, and 6. Khmiadashvili won 6-2, 7-6 while Lang posted similar scores in his win at No. 4 7-5, 6-4. Woldmoe also came out on top at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-3 outcome.
