Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – Two costly Bulldog errors in the top of the 10th inning helped Mercer defeat Butler on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 5-4. The game broke loose in the sixth inning and would eventually come back together with a tied score after eight full. In the end, Mercer picked up the win after a game-winning RBI single from Hunter Bening in the extra frame.
The two teams went scoreless through the first five innings of action while battling cold temperatures and gusting winds near 20 MPH. Mercer scored first with three in the top of the sixth, but BU would counter with two in the bottom half. Chris Maranto came to the dish with the bases loaded and recorded a two-RBI single to right field. Gehrig Parker and Tyler Houston came around to score.
After a 1-2-3 seventh, Butler would grab their bats and tie the game at three after an RBI double from Parker, his second extra-base hit of the contest. The game wouldn't be tied long however as a Mercer sac bunt in the eighth regained the Bear lead.
Butler never flinched in crunch time as Maranto would return to the plate in the bottom of eight to hit a triple to right field. He would have to exit the game after sustaining a leg injury that occurred after rounding second base. Cole Malloy would pinch run for Maranto and eventually come home to score the game-tying run after an RBI single from Mike Kseniak.
Kseniak's hit was one of 12 on the day for BU as they recorded two more hits than the visiting team. The Bulldogs kept Mercer in check by only using two arms in the contest. Bobby Napoleon tossed the first 5.1 innings while Quentin Miller came in for the final 4.2. Each pitcher was solid despite combining for only one strikeout.
Maranto and Parker highlighted the team offensively combining for five hits and three RBIs. Parker hit back-to-back doubles when it really counted and Maranto came up with his fourth triple of the season.
The Bulldogs will try to avoid the sweep by taking a win in tomorrow's getaway game. First pitch is slated for Noon.
