Box Score QUEENS, N.Y. – The Butler bats came alive during game three of a three-game road series at St. John's on Sunday afternoon allowing the Bulldogs to record a 13-5 victory at Kaiser Field. BU recorded a season-high 18 hits on the day and tied their team-high RBI total with 12.
The Bulldogs scored at least one run in six of the nine innings on Sunday to build a commanding lead. Jeff Schank got the start for BU, but didn't go a full five innings which pushed the win to Danny Pobereyko who tossed 3.1 innings of action.
Schank struck out three and walked three batters during his time on the mound. STJ scattered nine hits over the diamond against the lefty which resulted in four earned runs. Pobereyko came up with a team-high four strikeouts during his outing which included just four Red Storm hits and one run. The final BU arm to be used on Sunday was Zach Barnes who pitched a perfect ninth inning.
Butler's offense couldn't be slowed down on Sunday no matter who STJ put on the mound. Seven total arms were used by the home team with five of the seven allowing more than one hit.
Leading the charge offensively for Butler was lead-off man Michael Hartnagel. The shortstop went 5-for-6 from the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Two of his five hits went for extra bases with BU ending the contest with four doubles overall.
Hartnagel became the first Bulldog this season to record five hits in a single game. He now has 15 multi-hit games on the year and extends his team-best hitting streak to 13 games.
Jordan Lucio and Chris Maranto were also heavily involved in today's outcome by recording three hits each. Both Lucio and Maranto scored two runs; Maranto was the team RBI leader with three while Lucio ended the game with two.
Lucio and Gehrig Parker put BU on top early by recording RBIs in the first inning. Drew Small would join the action in the second with a fielder's choice RBI that moved the game to 3-0.
The getaway game would feature Butler scoring five runs in the top of the third off four hits. Maranto picked up two RBIs with a single to left centerfield in the inning and Hartnagel would join him in the RBI column with a single.
Maranto would stay hot from the plate with another RBI in the fifth, this time off a single through the left side of the infield. The scoring spree would continue in the sixth with Lucio and Connor Dall recording RBI singles.
BU went scoreless through the seventh and eighth innings, the only back-to-back frames where they didn't generate a run, but Tyler Houston would change their luck in the ninth with a two-RBI single back up the middle of the field that scored Dan Busch and Hartnagel.
Butler will now take this momentum into Tuesday's contest at Eastern Illinois. The 3 PM start will be one of four non-conference games set for the week. BU will step out of conference play over the weekend and host a three-game series at Bulldog Park vs. Mercer.
