INDIANAPOLIS –
Breann Pempek scored the game-winning goal for Butler on Friday night with less than a minute to play in overtime as the Bulldogs held off Ohio 2-1 in the regular season home opener. Pempek took an assist from
Carly Goehring to break the tie by beating the keeper to the left side.
"We didn't play particularly well tonight," Co-Head Coach
Tari St. John said after the match. "We had some moments where we played well, but it wasn't for a full 90 minutes. That can be expected in a home opener, but the bottom line is that we came out of this match with a win and we will definitely take that."
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first at the Butler Bowl after an Ohio hand ball foul set up
Serina Kashimoto with a penalty kick. Kashimoto took her time and buried the shot past the diving goalkeeper to the left side of the net (14:33).
BU would hold onto that 1-0 edge for the remainder of the first half, but a quick strike from the Bobcats in the second frame would tie the contest. Ohio took advantage of a free kick and sent the ball into the box where goalkeeper
Hannah Luedtke punched the ball out of traffic. Unfortunately for BU the ball landed at the feet of Katie McCurley who scored her first goal of the season unassisted (48:57).
The two evenly matched teams would finish regulation deadlocked at 1-1, but the difference-maker would come in the first overtime session with Pempek leading BU to victory.
The Bulldogs will return to action this weekend with a road match at Eastern Michigan. Action at Scicluna Field is slated for 1 PM
