Box Score On a hot and humid night in Louisville, Ky., Butler and the host Cardinals played to a 0-0 draw in the 2016 regular season opener for both teams.
Eric Dick had 10 saves for Butler, highlighting a strong defensive effort. Each team is now 0-0-1 on the season.
Seven of Dick's saves came in the first half as Louisville had a significant shot advantage in the first 45 minutes.
However, it was in the extra time that both teams had several of their best opportunities of the night. The Cardinals twice found the post during the extra periods. In the final two minutes of the match,
Isaac Galliford pushed forward on a counterattack and his shot was turned away by Louisville netminder Stefan Cleveland. The rebound went to freshman
Lewis Suddick, but his shot was stopped by the Cardinals defense that was manning the line with Cleveland out of position.
The heat played a large role as both teams had players cramp up in the latter stages of the match. Butler coach
Paul Snape utilized two substitutes that provided breaks to several of his players in the field, but six Bulldogs played the entire 110 minutes in addition to Dick.
Galliford led the Bulldogs with four shots, while
Eric Leonard added two. Louisville had 23 shots and 11 corner kicks in the match.
All seven of Butler's international players got the start in Friday's match, including a trio of freshmen in Galliford, Suddick and
Alex Lehtinen.
The Bulldogs return to action and open the home portion of their schedule Tuesday night at the Butler Bowl, hosting cross-town foe IUPUI for a 7 p.m. match.
