INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Hoosiers defeated the Butler Bulldogs 1-0 under rainy conditions on Friday night with a goal in the 78th minute of action. Caroline Dreher separated the two teams with a deflection goal that would give IU their first win of the season.
"I thought the final 45 minutes of this match featured some of the best soccer we have played all season,"
Tari St. John stated after the game. "We created a lot of chances and were good in the final third, outside of the final pass. It's just unfortunate that a fluke goal beat us because when you play as good as we did tonight you want the validation of a positive result. That being said I think it's our job as coaches to ensure that the team is aware of the success that we had in that second half. It's a great platform to have as we now shift our focus on Akron this Sunday.
Neither team had an advantage in the first half, but the Bulldogs came out as the aggressors in the second. BU took 10 shots over the final 45 minutes of action compared to just four for the Hoosiers. Butler won the overall shot battle 13-9 and took four corner kicks compared to just one from Indiana.
Four different players took a team-high three shots for BU on Friday.
Serina Kashimoto,
Carly Goehring,
Jamison Midgley and
Breann Pempek all impacted the match, but couldn't get BU on the scoreboard. The shot total was rounded out with
Madison Toth taking a shot on goal.
Butler's attack in the second half forced IU goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu into making eight saves, seven of which came in the final 45 minutes.
Hannah Luedtke on the opposite end made three stops for the Bulldogs.
With the setback, BU moves to 1-1-1 early in the 2016 season. Their next test will be a home match on Sunday afternoon against the Akron Zips. Action is slated to begin at 1 PM.
