PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bulldogs picked up their 15th win of the regular season on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep at Providence (25-12, 25-22, 25-20). Butler improved their BIG EAST record to 5-4 while the Friars move to 4-4 in league play.
Anna Logan led Butler offensively with 16 kills on 30 attempts (.400). She was one of two BU players to reach a double figure kill total. Fellow outside hitter
Whitney Beck ended the contest with 11 kills and 13 digs. She posted the only double-double of the match for BU.
Natalie Ravenell and
Taylor Takeda were solid for Butler defensively. Each player notched 12 digs. Ravenell added four blocks, a category that was led by
Bri Lilly who posted five total. Lilly was highly efficient on the offensive side with eight kills off just 13 swings (.538).
Makayla Ferguson was in the box score with 43 assists, four digs, three kills and two blocks.
Brooke Gregory was yet another impact player for BU with seven kills and three blocks on the afternoon.
Butler came up with 8.5 team blocks and limited the Friars to a .154 attack percentage. Providence didn't have any student-athletes record 10 kills.
The Bulldogs dominated the opening set to jump out to a 1-0 lead. They doubled up the Friars 15-7 at the midway point and would cruise to victory after kills from Ravenell and Logan.
Set two was much closer with Butler clinging onto a 23-22 lead.
Brooke Gregory gave the team some breathing room with a kill off a Ferguson assist and a service ace from
Whitney Beck would give BU the 2-0 advantage.
The third and final set went to BU 25-20. Butler broke a 12-12 tie and would never trail the rest of the way. Providence kept the score close and climbed back within two at 22-20, but three-straight from Butler would end any chance of a PC comeback.
Butler will return to action next weekend with a pair of road matches in BIG EAST play. They will face the DePaul Blue Demons on Oct. 20 and end the road trip with a match at Marquette the following day. Each contest will be played at 7 PM.
