@ButlerMBB Knocks Off Portland State, 71-69, in PK80 Friday

Box Score
Senior Kelan Martin blocked a three-point attempt by Portland State's Deontae North with three seconds remaining as Butler was able to hang on for a 71-69 win in Friday play at the Phil Knight PK80 Invitational in Portland, Ore.

North's three-pointer with 42 seconds remaining pulled the Vikings within two. On the ensuing possession, Butler's Kamar Baldwin was called for a charge to give PSU the ball back with 16 seconds to play. That's when Martin was able to get the block.

"This was a great bounceback game for us," said coach LaVall Jordan. "We're still just six games into a lot of guys in new roles, but we had the attitude and mindset that we wanted today. We were resilient and had some grit out there. We can shoot the ball better, and that will come, but this was a good team win."

Both teams are now 4-2 on the season. Portland State had a four-point halftime advantage on Duke Thursday before falling for their first loss of the season.

Tyler Wideman had 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting, just two points shy of his career-high. He added a game-high eight rebounds, including six on the offensive end.

Wideman played a large role in Butler's 44-20 advantage in points in the paint. That helped to balance out the Vikings' 12-of-26 shooting from three-point range.

After taking a 38-34 halftime lead, Butler would grow the lead to nine at 47-38 with 15:57 remaining. However, the Bulldogs could never push the advantage to double figures as Portland State repeatedly had an answer. A Michael Mayhew three-pointer followed by a Brandon Hollins' free throw cut Butler's lead to a single point at 63-62 with 4:26 to play. The Bulldogs would score eight of the next 10 points to retake a seven-point lead before PSU scored the final five points of the game and had the three-point attempt in the closing seconds.

Martin had 16 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs, and Paul Jorgensen made four three-pointers en route to 14 points. He added five assists and five rebounds.

Butler shot 51 percent in the contest, including 25-of-40 from two-point range.

North led Portland State with 18 points; Mayhew added 17.

Butler's Sean McDermott was limited to 18 minutes after leaving the game early in the second half with an ankle injury after landing awkwardly going for a rebound. He is questionable for the Bulldogs' next game.

Baldwin had seven rebounds and three steals for Butler.

Butler concludes PK80 play Sunday at Noon (Pacific, 3 p.m. Eastern) in the fifth-place game. The Bulldogs will play the winner of the Ohio State-Stanford game that will be played later Friday. The game will air on ESPN2.
