@ButlerMBB Pulls Out 86-79 Win in Final Exhibition Contest

The Bulldogs finished the exhibition portion of the schedule with an 86-79 win over Lincoln Memorial Saturday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Senior Kelan Martin led four Bulldogs in double figures with 19 points and seven rebounds.

LMU, which played in the NCAA Division II semifinals each of the past two years, pulled within five at 49-44 less than four minutes into the second half. Butler responded to take its largest lead of the contest at 64-51 with 10:25 to play. But the visiting Railsplitters would not go away and cut the lead to four at 74-70 with just over four minutes remaining. The Bulldogs hit free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

"We told our guys that is a really good team," said coach LaVall Jordan. "They're well-coached and they've won a lot of games the last few years. We need to play better defensively, but I really liked our response tonight. We had an answer every time they came at us. This was a game that we knew was going to test us and one that would push us. In situations like that, you can learn a lot about your team. And we did tonight."

Martin's 19 points included an 11-of-11 performance from the free throw line. His seven rebounds led the team. As Lincoln Memorial hung in throughout the game, Jordan kept his rotation tighter than last week's exhibition with Hanover. Martin played 35 minutes for the Bulldogs.

Kamar Baldwin had 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Butler shot 56 percent as a team. The sophomore made five of his six free throw attempts as the Bulldogs went 16-of-20 from the line. Baldwin added four rebounds and four assists.

Nate Fowler had 11 points off the bench and Tyler Wideman scored 10 to go along with six rebounds. Sean McDermott (nine), Paul Jorgensen (eight), freshman Aaron Thompson (six) and Henry Baddley (six) rounded out the scoring.

Emanuel Terry had 24 points and nine rebounds for the Railsplitters. He made eight of his nine attempts and had five blocks. Four LMU players posted double figures as the visitors shot 52 percent from the field.

Former Butler standout Shawn Vanzant, who played a key role on both of Butler's Final Four teams, is an assistant coach on the Lincoln Memorial staff.

Butler opens the regular season Friday night when Kennesaw State visits Hinkle Fieldhouse.
