WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Butler Bulldogs 3-0 on Sunday afternoon to win the 2017 BIG EAST Tournament Championship. The match featured a 1-0 halftime score, but two additional Hoya goals over the final 45 minutes of action would seal the victory.
Georgetown won their second title since joining the BIG EAST and second consecutive crown. They became the first team to win back-to-back BIG EAST titles since Marquette in 2012-13.
Today's match was the first time Butler has allowed multiple goals this season. They entered the game as the national leader in GAA (0.197).
A header goal from Taylor Pak separated the two teams just over six minutes into the first half. Rachel Corboz took a free kick and sent the ball to the middle of the field where Pak connected on the header. It was Pak's fourth goal of the season.
The second goal came off the foot of Caitlin Farrell. BU goalkeeper
Leonie Doege made a save on Meaghan Nally's shot, but was unable to hold onto the ball. Farrell scored off the rebound to give the Hoyas the two goal cushion.
Any chance of a comeback would be eliminated in the final stages of the championship match as a costly turnover would make the game 3-0. Doege's kick was intercepted by Corboz. The talented Georgetown midfielder would take advantage of Doege being out of position and launched a shot over her head and into the back right corner of the net.
Georgetown outshot Butler 22-3 on Sunday by recording 11 shots in each half. Each BU keeper made four saves in 45 minutes of action.
Hannah Luedtke once again got the start while Doege would finish the final 45.
