This will be the 11th match-up between the two programs with a majority of the games coming since Butler joined the BIG EAST prior to the 2013-14 season. The teams first met in the 2009 Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden (a 72-65 Georgetown win). Georgetown leads the series, 6-4. The teams split the 2016-17 series with each winning on the other's home court.
• Butler has won 43 consecutive home games against non-conference opponents. The streak dates back to a loss to Pittsburgh in the 2012 College Basketball Invitational (CBI). That current streak trails only Duke (139) and Arizona (47).
• JORDAN VS. EWING: LaVall Jordan and Patrick Ewing meet in their respective BIG EAST coaching debuts. They are two of four BIG EAST coaches leading their alma maters (Chris Mullin, Chris Mack).
•
Kelan Martin averages 15.6 points per game in seven career meetings against Georgetown. That includes one double-double, and a career-best 35 points on Feb. 2, 2016.
• The last two meetings between Butler and Georgetown in Washington, D.C., have gone to overtime. Butler won both games.
•
Kamar Baldwin averaged 13.0 points per game against Georgetown in two match-ups last season.
• Eight of the 11 Bulldogs who played against Western Illinois Thursday night set a career-high in either points, rebounds, or assists. Two others tied a career-high.
• The 61-point win over Western Illinois was Butler's largest since beating The Citadel, 144-71, in the 2015-16 season opener.
END ON A HIGH NOTE: Butler ended the non-conference schedule with a season-high 107 points Thursday night against Western Illinois. The Bulldogs went 18-of-31 from three-point range. Butler's 18 three-pointers tied the second-best mark in program history (at Detroit, Feb. 25, 2006), just shy of the 20 hit at Cleveland State, Feb. 8, 2007.
THAT'S OFFENSIVE: Butler is now 7-0 this season when scoring 80 or more points, and 9-0 when scoring north of 70. The Bulldogs are 8-0 when shooting a better field goal percentage than their opponent and 8-0 when shooting better than 50 percent from the field.
Tyler Wideman and Paul Jorgensen combine to average 25.6 points per game on 61.5-percent shooting in Butler's 10 wins. The duo are scoring a combined 10.0 points per game on 35-percent shooting in the team's three losses.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Butler ran its record to 8-0 this season at Hinkle Fieldhouse, topping Western Illinois, 107-46, Thursday night. In the eight home wins, the Bulldogs are averaging 86.5 points per game while shooting 53.8 percent from the field. Butler has reached 80 points in seven of the games. Butler is 2-3 away from its home court, averaging 63.6 ppg on 38-percent shooting.
NAVIGATING THE ARC: Butler's 18 three-pointers Thursday nearly doubled the previous season-high of 10 from the win over Furman Nov. 18. The .581 percentage from behind the arc was almost 15 percentage points better than the previous season-high of .435 (also against Furman). On the defensive side, Butler entered the game allowing opponents 39.2-percent shooting from three-point range. The Bulldogs limited Western Illinois to 1-of-15 (.067) from long range Thursday. Western Illinois entered the game against Butler averaging 8.8 made three-pointers per game on 41-percent shooting.
AN EFFICIENT 20 MINUTES: Senior
Kelan Martin used 18 first-half points to finish with 20 points on the night, his seventh 20-point game of the season. In that first half, Martin moved from 14
th to 11
th on Butler's career scoring list, passing Shelvin Mack, Wayne Burris and Roosevelt Jones. Martin now has 1,537 career points, just six points shy of Butler's Top 10.
Martin handed out a career-best seven assists Thursday against Western Illinois. The seven helpers were a season-best for a Butler player.
BUYING SHARES: Butler had 23 assists on 37 made field goals against Western Illinois. The 23 assists were a season-high, bettering the 21 assists in the win over Morehead State two nights prior. That ball movement led to five Bulldogs scoring in double figures, the second game in a row (and third this season) that has happened this season.
MORE ON MARTIN: The 6-7 senior has four double-doubles this season and has led the Bulldogs in scoring eight times in the team's 13 games. His 29 points against Utah Dec. 5 were a season-high and the third-best scoring output of his Butler career. Martin has 28 career 20-point outings and has led the team in scoring 39 times in his Butler career.
STEP RIGHT IN: With
Tyler Wideman sitting out Thursday's game due to oral surgery to remove his wisdom teeth the day before, junior
Nate Fowler made the third start of his career. He responded with his first career double-double, featuring 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. He added a career-best four blocks.
All three of Fowler's double-digit scoring performances this season have come in Butler's last four games.
HE'S A 'BAAAAAD' MAN: Sophomore
Henry Baddley had a career-high 20 points in Thursday's win over Western Illinois. He made seven of his eight attempts from the field, including all four of his three-point attempts. Baddley's 20 points came in 15 minutes and more than doubled his previous career-high of nine points set earlier this season.
CASHING IN: Butler forced Western Illinois into 19 turnovers Thursday night, and converted those into 31 points. The Bulldogs had a 31-5 advantage in points off turnovers. On the season, Butler is averaging a 19.2-11.2 advantage on points off turnovers.
STRONG MARGINS: Butler has a +3.8 turnover margin on the season, which is third in the BIG EAST and 33
rd nationally. That is helped by the Bulldogs averaging 7.8 steals per game. The 12 steals against Western Illinois Thursday were a season-high.
Kamar Baldwin is fourth in the BIG EAST, averaging 1.9 steals per game.
Kelan Martin,
Paul Jorgensen and
Aaron Thompson each also average better than one steal per game.
'PAULING' OUT: Paul Jorgensen set a new career-high with 18 points Thursday night against Western Illinois. That came two nights after he tied his previous career-high with 16 points, all of which came in the second half. Jorgensen is third on the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game. He has reached double figures in 10 games so far this season after hitting the mark only eight times in 73 career games at George Washington before transferring to Butler.
Jorgensen has hit double figures in eight straight games, knocking down 50 percent of his three-point attempts (25-50) over that stretch. He has hit three or more three-pointers in seven of those eight games.
COLLECTING THE CAROMS: Butler out-rebounded Morehead State, 42-24, Dec. 19. The +18 rebounding margin was Butler's best of the season. Butler has out-rebounded its opponent nine times this season, including the last six games.
Sean McDermott tied his career-high with six rebounds against Western Illinois Dec. 21.
B-M(EN)-O-C: Butler posts
Tyler Wideman and
Nate Fowler combined to make 10 of their 11 attempts from the field against Morehead State. The duo registered 26 points. Those 26 points came in only a combined 31 minutes of play. Wideman leads the team with a 69-percent field goal percentage on the season; Fowler is shooting 61 percent.
Wideman is second in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage.
SEASON-BESTS: Kamar Baldwin led the Bulldogs with 19 points against Youngstown State Dec. 9, the season-high for the sophomore and just the fifth time in his career that he has led Butler in scoring.
Nate Fowler posted a season-high 12 points (on 6-of-7 shooting), while freshman
Christian David went 5-of-5 from the field to register a career-high 10 points.
PAINT JOB: Butler has won the points-in-the-paint battle in all 10 of its wins this season. The Bulldogs had a season-best 62 points in the paint against Youngstown State Dec. 9. The +36 discrepancy in paint points was also a season-best for the Bulldogs. On the season, Butler is averaging a +13.3 edge in points in the paint.
