Butler overcame a 20-point deficit to take a 91-89 double-overtime win at Georgetown Wednesday night in the BIG EAST opener for both teams.
Kamar Baldwin had a career-high 31 points and
Kelan Martin's finish in the lane with less than three seconds to play in the second extra session gave the Bulldogs the win.
The overtime sessions would not have been possible if not for
Sean McDermott's tip-in at the end of regulation. Georgetown's Jessie Govan gave the Hoyas a 75-73 lead with seven seconds to play. Baldwin took the in-bounds pass, dribbled up court and let go of a three-point attempt that would have won the game. It caromed off, but McDermott was there to tip it in among traffic as the regulation horn sounded. It was the most important of his career-high 12 rebounds.
Butler never lead in the first overtime and it was McDermott once again who would tie the game for the Bulldogs with two free throws with 25 seconds to play in the first extra session. Butler would force a turnover on the ensuing possession to send the game to double overtime.
Baldwin would give Butler (now 11-3 on the season) the lead at 87-85 before Georgetown scored the next four points on free throws to take the lead 89-87 with 1:04 left to play.Â
From there, Martin took over.Â
With 51 seconds to play, Martin scored to tie the game up 89-89. After a Georgetown turnover with 29 seconds to play, Butler held the ball and let Martin take control in the closing seconds. He finished with a contested runner in the lane with three seconds to play to give the Bulldogs the win.
After shooting 32 percent in the first half and falling behind 42-24 at the half, the Bulldogs mounted a monumental comeback. The Bulldogs scored 51 points in the second half thanks to 64-percent shooting.
"We've been down like that before," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan. "So they had a reference point, and they had a poise about them just to move on to the next possession and move on to the next play."
Martin gave Butler its only lead prior to overtime at 71-70 with 1:31 to play. The Bulldogs had chipped away at a Georgetown lead that grew to 20 in the final minute of the first half.
Baldwin played 49 of the game's 50 minutes. He went 12-of-21 from the field in bettering his previous career-best of 21 points.
Martin had 27 points. He moved into tenth place on Butler's career scoring list (1,564 points).
The Bulldogs committed only 12 turnovers in the 50 minutes, and forced the Hoyas into 12-of-36 shooting after the first 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs overcame a 3-of-21 performance from behind the arc after hitting 18 three-pointers in the previous game against Western Illinois just six days
ago.
Tyler Wideman added 15 points and eight rebounds for Butler. Most of his work came down low as Butler had a 50-34 advantage in points in the paint.
Govan (19 points and 13 rebounds) and Marcus Derrickson (23 points, 11 rebounds), each had double-doubles for Georgetown, which is now 10-2 on the season.
This is the third consecutive game between the two schools played in Washington, D.C., to go to overtime. Butler has won all three. This also marks the first time in Butler's five seasons as a member of the BIG EAST that the Bulldogs have won their league opener.
Butler also owns an overtime win over Ohio State this season after trailing by 15 points in that contest in the second half.
The Bulldogs continue BIG EAST play Saturday, hosting No. 1-ranked Villanova at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The 4 p.m. tip will air nationally on CBS.Â
