@ButlerMBB Offense Explodes for 110-86 Win Over St. John's

Box Score

Butler's offense exploded for a 110-86 win over St. John's Wednesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. With the win and results in other BIG EAST contests tonight, Butler is now alone in second place in the BIG EAST standings at 9-5.

Butler is 20-6 overall, posting its 11th 20-win season in the last 12 years. Wednesday night's win avenges a loss to the Red Storm Dec. 29 in Queens, N.Y.

Butler's largest lead was the 24-point final margin. The Bulldogs' offense was so efficient that they won by 24 points despite allowing St. John's to post a season-high (86 points) for a Butler opponent. The 110 points are the most scored by the Bulldogs in a BIG EAST game, bettering the previous mark of 95 scored in a win over Marquette on Senior Day last season.

"St. John's is a tough team to guard because they put you in space and they turn you over," said Butler coach Chris Holtmann, who now has three 20-win seasons in his three seasons leading the Bulldogs. "I thought we shared the ball at a high level tonight and it was good to see shots fall for a lot of our guys. We played pretty good defense in the first half, but not so much in the second.

"Our guys need to continue to focus on improving and growing with every practice as we try to chip away at some of our deficiencies."

Andrew Chrabascz and Avery Woodson led five Bulldogs in double figures as both of the players scored 20 points. Woodson's 20 points were a season-high and his six three-pointers tied a career-high he set while playing at Memphis when he hit six triples against Houston Dec. 31, 2014.

Tyler Wideman (14 points and 10 rebounds) posted his second career double-double. Wideman went 6-of-7 from the field. According to STATS Inc., Wideman entered the game tied for fifth among active Division I players in field goal percentage at home (67.1 percent entering tonight).

Much of Butler's damage came from behind the arc. Butler went 13-of-26 from the three-point line, matching a season-high for triples. It marks the sixth time this season that Butler shot 50 percent or better from long distance.

Butler scored the first seven points of the game, but it was a 13-4 run to close the first half that gave the Bulldogs a 54-35 halftime advantage. Butler hit nine of its three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. St. John's would only close the gap to 14 in the second half as Butler kept the visitors at arm's length to post the win.

Kelan Martin had 19 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes of play. Tyler Lewis had nine assists, including seven in the first half. The nine assists are a season-high for Lewis.

Butler out-rebounded St. John's, 40-25. Butler shot 58 percent for the game and assisted on 17 of its 34 made field goals.

St. John's (12-15 overall and 6-8 in the BIG EAST) was led by Federico Mussini with 20 points. Four Red Storm players scored at least 15 points as the team shot 44 percent and went 27-of-37 from the free throw line.

The game featured 53 fouls. Butler was shooting the bonus at the 15:08 mark in the second half. The Bulldogs went 29-of-40 at the charity stripe.
