No. 22 @ButlerMBB Knocks Off No. 2 Villanova, 74-66, on the Road

Box Score

No. 22 Butler claimed arguably its most significant regular season road win with a 74-66 win at No. 2 Villanova Wednesday night at The Pavilion. The win completes the regular season sweep for Butler, which improves to 22-6 overall and 11-5 in BIG EAST play. Villanova is now 26-3 (13-3 BIG EAST).

"This is a tremendous win for our group," said Butler coach Chris Holtmann. "I have so much respect for Nova and for Jay. To come on the road and beat a team of this caliber says a lot about our guys. We played with great composure and made plays down the stretch. Hopefully we're continuing to make strides and moving forward."

Butler's win snapped a 48-game winning streak for the Wildcats at The Pavilion, one that dates back to 2013. No. 2 Villanova also serves as Butler's highest-ranked true road win in program history, besting a win at No. 10 Wisconsin during the 2000-01 season.

Kelan Martin came off the bench to lead Butler with 22 points and eight rebounds. The junior went 7-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. He hit five of his six free throw attempts. He played a key role in a decisive 18-0 run midway through the second half that saw Butler respond to Villanova taking their biggest lead at 49-42 with 10:37 to play. Martin had nine of those 18 points. Over the next six minutes, Butler would take a 60-49 lead.

Down the stretch, the Bulldogs hit enough free throws to seal the win, ending the night 10-of-12 at the stripe. Butler made its final seven attempts from the field.
Kamar Baldwin added 15 points for Butler, with 11 coming in the first half. Avery Woodson had 13 points, including four free throws in the closing stretch.

Jalen Brunson led Villanova with 24 points; Josh Hart added 18.

Andrew Chrabascz played a team-high 36 minutes for Butler. He tied a career-high with eight assists as the Bulldogs assisted on 21 of 27 made field goals. The 6-7 senior added seven rebounds. His eight assists matched the team total for Villanova.

Butler out-rebounded the Wildcats, 32-31. Uncharacteristically, the teams combined for 31 turnovers. Behind 60-percent shooting in the final 20 minutes, Butler shot 51 percent for the game.

Butler scored the first eight points of the game before Villanova responded with the next seven to set the tone for a tight first half that saw VU take a 29-28 halftime lead. The teams entered the game averaging a combined 24.1 turnovers per contest. They had 17 in the first half alone. After Villanova started the game only 3-of-15 from the field, the Wildcats shot 10-of-13 to close the half.

The Bulldogs return to action Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. tip in Cincinnati against Xavier. The game will air nationally on FS1.
