Strong Second Half Fuels Creighton to Victory over Butler in Quarterfinals

Box Score

MILWAUKEE—Second-seeded and nationally ranked RV/No.23 Creighton used a strong second half and a BIG EAST Tournament-best 17 points from All-BIG EAST First Team selection Audrey Faber as well as 16 from BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Jaylyn Agnew to surge past ten-seed Butler 64-55.

Lauren Works was the third Creighton player to notch double figures with ten total points to go with seven rebounds. Sydney Lamberty also contributed for the Blue Jays, notching eight points, ten rebounds and six assists. This victory gives Creighton the series sweep over Butler and marks their 19 win in their last 21 games.

For Butler, Taylor Buford was the lone Bulldog in double digits, putting up 11 points. All-BIG EAST Second Team Honoree Tori Schickel scored six points and grabbed nine rebounds. Creighton held Butler to 36.2 percent shooting for the game.

Neither team scored for the first two minutes of action and the defensive battle continued throughout the first, as the Blue Jays missed their first nine shots and shot 4 of 19 for the frame. On the other side, Butler shot 6 of 18 from the field to take a narrow 14-10 lead after the first quarter.

Both teams' shooting improved in the second and Michelle Weaver lead a balanced Butler attack with seven points to take a 31-29 lead at the half. Schickel also contributed with six points, five rebounds and three assists. For Creighton, Faber fueled the Jays with 12 points at the intermission.

Creighton took its first lead of the game to start the half and held Butler without a field goal for almost five minutes at the end of the quarter to hold a 51-44 lead after three. The Blue Jays continued their second half momentum in the fourth to secure the victory, marking the ninth time this season Creighton has won after trailing at half. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 15 times and only scored 11 fourth-quarter points, shooting under 30 percent for the second half.

Creighton will next face off March 6 at 3 p.m. Central against the winner of the matchup between three-seed Marquette and six-seed Georgetown taking place later today. The Blue Jays swept the season series over both the Golden Eagles and the Hoyas and will look to advance to the BIG EAST Tournament Final for the second year in a row with a win. This is Creighton's third semifinal appearance in the past four years.
