CHICAGO – The Bulldogs faced two different opponents on Saturday, but the result along with the score would stay the same with Butler defeating both Eastern Michigan and Chicago State by the final score of 6-2. The doubleheader hosted by Chicago State moved Butler's winning streak to eight-straight.
The top of the order was excellent for BU in the first game with
Tyler Houston,
Garrett Christman and
Michael Hartnagel all contributing two hits and a run scored. RBI's came from
Gehrig Parker,
Jordan Lucio and
Michael DiViesti, allowing BU to claim the four-run win.
BU had to play from behind early as EMU pushed two runs across in the first two innings. The game would pull even at 2-2 in the top of the third after a two-RBI double from DiViesti that scored Lucio and Hartnagel.
Two more Butler runs came around to score in the fifth and the finishing touches would include two more in the top of the sixth.
Jeff Schank earned the win on the mound by throwing seven full innings. The BU ace struck out six and only walked one. The final two innings belonged to
Josh Walker.
Walker was outstanding out of the bullpen by limiting Eastern Michigan to just one hit over his two frames. He walked one, but struck out three.
Game two featured another great start from a BU pitcher with
Ryan Pepiot tossing seven full innings and only allowing two hits. Pepiot gave up two runs before handing the ball off to
Ottavio Dattolo, but he struck out five to his credit. Dattolo secured the lead over the final two innings of play. He allowed three hits and struck out one.
BU took an early 3-0 lead in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The lead would grow to 6-0 after six and Chicago State would break up the shutout with two in the bottom of seven.
Hartnagel and Parker supplied Butler with six of their nine hits in the nightcap. All five RBI's came from different players.
Butler will stay the night in Chicago and return to Cougar Stadium tomorrow to face Eastern Michigan on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 11 AM.
